      Anesthesia and Lucid Dreaming

Hey guys, I'm new here. Been trying to LD and reading these forums for a while now, but no success so far. I'm hoping that joining here will help increase (read: make existent) my success rate.

Now, to the point. I'm wondering if it's possible/anyone's tried to LD while under anesthesia, or even if you dream under it. I ask this because I'm going to have a minor surgery tomorrow and am interested to see if it's possible to do. I've had a few other surgeries over the course of my life and don't remember having any dreams while I was under. However, those were all the hardcore anesthesia where you're completely asleep and need a breathing tube and all that crap while you're out. This one's much more small-scale, though, and the anesthesia will be weaker, which (correct me if I'm wrong) means my sleep state will be closer to normal sleep. If it's close enough to normal sleep that I'm able to dream, then I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to go lucid too.

Regardless, I intend to give it a try. I won't have time to check replies to this post before I go in (they want me at 7:40 AM), but I'll let you know how it goes. And, even if the anesthesia thing doesn't work, I'll likely be tired all day as a result of the surgery. With the amount of sleeping I anticipate doing over the next 24 or 36 hours, I've got to get at least one LD, right?

Welcome to Dreamviews and good luck in your attempt ! Remember, if you can dream, then you can absolutely become lucid. It is possible to dream under anesthesia though I believe it to be uncommon.

All the experiences i have had under anesthesia have been not remembering any dreams. You see the TV shows and everything, but i think like yoshi said it is just too uncommon.

Also i think that since the body is FORCED asleep, i dont believe it has enough of a chance to make the connection that you are dreaming. So maybe it is possible, but you would have be damned good to know you are dreaming when you are suddenly forced into a dream.

And no, a WILD is not being forced into a dream. That is a much longer method then anesthesia.

I had extremely vivid dreams when the dentist gave me knock-out gas to remove some teeth. When I say vivid, I mean VIVID. We're looking at decades gone and I can still remember the dreams.

No joy on the anesthesia. As they put the mask over my face to knock me out I focused all my thoughts on having a lucid dream, but the next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room (confirmed awake after regaining enough of my consciousness to RC) with no memory of any dreams, lucid or otherwise. I've never remembered any dreams under anesthesia before, so I had a feeling it wouldn't work, but those were all before I discovered LDing, and I didn't want to pass up the opportunity .

Well, it was worth a shot.

But yeah, having been under a few times in my life, I imagine it would be pretty hard. That is some powerful stuff they give you. Even just for my wisdom teeth for which I was 'under' a whole 5 minutes, I was out like nobody's business.

I have had a couple of surgeries, one lasting several hours, and I did not remember having any dreams, or much of the period after I woke up. I did remember them pulling the breathing tube out (which they said I would not remember, so I suppose it might have been a dream) but that's about it.

I've only been on it for 1 time in my life. And I do not remember any dreams at all. Good Luck!

There have been multiple thread about this on DV.

Do not forget that Anesthesia can has severel functions, and one of them is Amnesia. Simply it prevents memory from forming.

Of course sometimes the body reacts different or the dose of the anesthesia is too small, but that has a minuscule chance of happening.

So even if you do experience something, it will probably be forgotten.

When ever I have gone under Anesthesia all I experience is an acclerated feeling of falling asleep, You will usually hear one more sentence after you vission goes and then the secound that goes you usually wake up in the "recovery room". At least that is how it is for me.

I tried it once when I had a General Anaesthetic for a small operation on my wrist. Complete blank. However..

A well-known UK Radio Presenter by the name of James Whale had what would be commonly described as an OBE when under General Anaesthetic in the Dentist's chair. Very interesting description given by him several times on the airwaves. I'm sure that he'd reply to you, if you contacted him via email. You could Google his contact details, if you're that interested.

Yes, I think it is entirely possible- I had a surgery on my ankle a while ago and I definitely had a dream, though I can't really recall the details of it. I was thinking of try WILD while going under anaesthesia when they will take the pins out but thinking about it again that might not be such a good idea because sometimes when I'm lucid I can see the room around me but I'm locked in my body, and I don't want to be stuck like that while they pull screws out of my ankle.
