Thread: Do you twitch when you are drifting off to sleep?

I know people have different HH experiences, but I was wondering if twitching is common. The twitches can be slight twitches at any part of my body, and one of the interesting ones is when my lips kind of "pout" slightly. I know once I experience these twitches that I am well on the way to sleep.

Yes, these involuntary movements are part of the "roll over" signal created by the brain. Your mind and body can be viewed as two separate things. As you fall asleep, your mind sends out signals in the form of itchy areas on the body or the overall urge to move. When the body responds to these signals by moving, the mind knows that you're still awake. When the body doesn't respond, that means that it is alseep, and the mind also goes to sleep. This phenomenon can be used for WILDs and is very useful. What you have to do is ignore these signals and stay perfectly still until your body falls asleep, keeping your mind awake the whole time.

@bobble. If you are twitching with no visuals or anything, this can be muscle spasms. You should drink more water and eat bananas (potassium) to stop these from coming on.

If these are accompanied by visuals, they are called hypnic jerks. You will be walking down a hallway and try to jump up onto something and you bend your legs to jump and then you wake up with your legs going crazy. This is very normal. I don't know if there is a way to stop this. It usually happens when I am a little low on sleep but high on LDing practice.

Definitely not hypnic jerks - thought I do get them sometimes. It's very subtle twitching. Never unpleasant.

Sensei, you bring up a good point. It could be muscle spasms rather than the roll over signal. I didn't know about the method being outdated; one thing I do know is that I've used it to achieve most of my WILDs over the past few years. I guess maybe it just works better for some people?

It is a method that is based on false assumptions about going to sleep. However, if you are searching for the right feeling for the wild with the right timing, and changing what you do accordingly, you are gonna be moving closer and closer to the goal. If you are focused on finding your own balance, you will be fine.
