Lucid Dreaming [2 volumes]: New Perspectives on Consciousness in Sleep Ryan Hurd and Kelly Bulkeley

Does anyone read or own this book by Ryan Hurd and Kelly Bulkeley? It's quite pricey... I have some questions

*by Ryan Hurd and Kelly Bulkeley, Editors
      Foreword by Stephen LaBerge

New scientific discoveries and movies like*Inception*have spurred interest in lucid dreaming.

      July 2014

      Praeger

      Pages 691
      Volumes 2
      Size 6 1/8x9 1/4
      Topics: Psychology/General

      Hardcover $131.00

      Description

In this fascinating new collection, an all-star team of researchers explores lucid dreaming not only as consciousness during sleep but also as a powerful ability cultivated by

      artists,
      scientists, and
      shamans alike

to achieve a variety of purposes and outcomes in the dream.

The first set of its kind,*Lucid Dreaming: New Perspectives on Consciousness in Sleep. *

provides a comprehensive showcase of the

      theories,
      research, and
      direct experience

that serve to illuminate how certain people can maintain conscious awareness while dreaming.

      The text is organized into two sections, covering science, psychology, and education;

      and

      religious traditions, creativity, and culture.

Contributors to this two-volume work include top dream experts across the globe—scholars sharing knowledge gained from deep personal explorations and cutting-edge scientific investigations.

      Topics covered include

      1) - the neuroscience of lucid dreaming,

      2) - clinical uses of lucid dreaming in treating trauma,

      3) - the secret history of lucid dreaming in English philosophy, and

      4) - spiritual practices of lucid dreaming in

      a) - Islam,

      b) - Buddhism, and

      c) - shamanic traditions.

The work also addresses lucid dreaming in movies including*The Matrix*and literature such as the fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien and explains how modern video gaming enhances lucidity.

This set serves as an ideal text and reference work for school libraries and academic courses in anthropology, psychology, religious studies, and cognitive science as well as for graduate-level study in holistic education—an increasingly popular specialization.

      Features

Presents a variety of expert perspectives on lucid dreaming from many different cultures that represent a breadth of disciplinary perspectives

Provides theoretical models that integrate scientific reason, mysticism, and individuals' experiences, making way for a new level of sophistication in the study of lucid dreaming

      Offers practical insights for

      therapists,

      teachers, and

      researchers as well as

      students and

scholars of psychology, anthropology, and religious studies

while containing accessible information and compelling personal narratives that will appeal to general readers.
I'll consider buying it, but, $131 plus the exchange rate and delivery-charge, mean that I will have to give buying this a lot of thought.

      I talked with

      Ryan Hurd,
      Kelly Bulkeley,
      G. Scott Sparrow, and
      Robert Waggoner

about their contributions to "Lucid Dreaming: New Perspectives on Consciousness in Sleep" volume 1 , which covers

      Science,
      Psychology and
      Education.

      Topics we discussed:

Ryan and Kelly, the editors of this 2-volume set, discussed how the project came about. (1:18)

Kelly Bulkeley talks about how often lucid dreaming occurs in the population, and how lucid dreams differ from regular dreams. (4:44)

Robert Waggoner discusses how to lucid dream, the different stages of lucid dreaming we go through as we explore its many possibilities, and what happens when you attempt advanced dreaming techniques early on (11:24)
      *
Ryan Hurd on the Paleolithic mind, placing lucid dreaming within the anthropology of extraordinary states, and working with lucid nightmares (18:21)

Scott Sparrow on how to reconcile our dual impulses to act freely in dreams, versus respecting the autonomy of dream characters and relating to them on their own terms (26:35)

I asked all four guests how dreams can aid people suffering from trauma and PTSD. (36:47)
The second book was talked about a week ago.

I splashed out on these, they're good. Not quite sure they're worth the asking price but if you've got deep pockets! There's a similar book out there called "Conscious Mind Sleeping Brain". It's a bit older but the same kind of deal with lots of lucid dream experts covering lots of topics. It went out of print for years but last time I looked you can get it again. Both are worth having.

What's wrong with buying a physical book? I know it's not as convenient as an e-book but there's something nice about a physical book.
Unless you're wanting to pirate them but I hope not because that's really unfair on the writers. A subject like lucid dreaming is so small scale that you're really hurting future research and the researchers by stealing their work.

Yeah I love physical books, but first I need to know if it's worth the money, or it's irrelevant bragging. That's why always try to pirate books and then If I see it's valuable book and it can help me or learn me something, I buy physical/e-book to give the money to the authors in return.

Well, I for one don't know if it's worth the money, but after looking at the various write-ups and reviews, I have added it to my Christmas wish list!
