Thread: Research project on lucid dreaming. Need advice!

Hi dreamers, how's everyone?

So it has been 2 weeks since my research project course started and i still haven't decided my topic. I am very very interested in lucid dreaming (and the science behind it), however the only thing that concerns me is how i am going to get surveys (especially in my school where only a few knows about lucid dreaming) and the reliability of sources. Not saying that what lucid dreamers say are not reliable, but psychology can sometimes be very subjective, ya know what i mean?

I know a few books that can be excellent references for this project, so really what i'm worried now is if i can get enough response. If i do decide to do this topic, i will definitely post questions, and most importantly surveys here for you guys.

What do you guys think? Will i get enough responses? Replies will be greatly appreciated, thanks

depends on what you want to do. If it's an unimportant (high-school) science project then it should be A-okay to ask fellow students and people on the internet
you should also collect demographic data, like age, gender, etc.
you certainly have to know what you want to find out
for instance, "Are religious people more likely to have lucid dreams?", or "Do people under stress/with sleep deprivation experience abnormal sleep related phenomenons, such as lucid dreaming, OBE, et al."

don't worry too much about the surveys, you can also have a project without a lot of surveys and experiments, as long as you collect good data from other scientists.

Thanks for the reply, Conscience! For the project, i need around 8 A3 pages of research (including surveys, interview, stats). What I'm currently thinking is how does lucid dreaming impact our waking lucid, however do you think this is a bit too broad? I think i should make the topic more specific but I'm worried that i don't have enough information for the specific topic (considering there isn't a lot of research done in lucid dreaming).

As Conscience says it depends on what you want to do and what you want to find out
I'm doing an MSc and my thesis is exploring how lucid dreaming may impact upon ones Mindfulness. I'm aiming to do 12 interviews or so, and am have almost this number done now. Your supervisor would advise you as to how much would be expected. What scale of project is it/ how many words/what type of course? Regarding psychology being subjective, it depends a bit on your research methodology. You could take a interpretivist stance and say everything is largely subjective, including the researchers own biases and method of questioning and writting up. That way your not stating "Facts", as much as, gathering data and analysis that would be of interest to others in a similar field. You would probably get some participants from this Forum. PM me if you want to look at my litriture review in its current stage. It would give you some sources to follow if nothing else

so you can see what they asked, (and latter what people suggested they had asked more pointedly so less speculative on dreamers part etc

but mostly so you can see the amount of response and the time frame survey got responded to (since you want to know quantity of stuff you can gather)

I think your research question is decent. you should be able to write enough
it's all about awareness, right?
So we figure if a person's more aware in their dreams (hence lucid dreams), they should also be more aware in their waking life
Now that's a hypothesis, if you want to investigate this you could add it to your survey
You could ask a bunch of lucid dreamers about odd details they've noticed throughout their day and compare it to a bunch of people who DON'T have LDs and find out if the dreamers have more awareness and attention during their everyday life.
