No you don't need to do so but it is better if you do and maybe it can cause a WILD.
You may get better results if you do it with a wbtb.

using a mantra while falling asleep is a good idea because it focus your attention on dreaming and you dont just drop unconscious burried in random day probelms into sleep.
things to focus on while falling asleep at evening: recall, noticing microawakenings, note ones dreams down in the night (getting lucid).

when i set a strong intention and have a very concentrated will i sometimes get a short lucid after 1,5h of sleep in the first sleepcycle but this is exceptional.

WBTB´s raise the possibility for a lucid very very drastically. THERE it makes a lot of sense falling asleep with the intention to lucid dream because very shortly after falling asleep REM is starting and the intention doesnt have to stay up so long like when you do it in the evening and it should kick in 4-6h later.

another good thing to do in the evening before falling asleep is to do visualization and incubation. go thru your dreamjournal and visualize your previous dreams. get the dreamfeeling and visualize how you get lucid in them how you notice the little clue you didnt notice previous night. do so with some nonlucids and maybe lucids if you have and then fall asleep. this helps to tune your mind into lucid dreaming too! you can do this for like 10min while sitting in your bed then lay down and say a mantra like i will remember my dreams or i will get lucid this night until you fall asleep. then wake up after 4-6h note down your dreams stay awake for a little time (depends on how fast you wake up/fall asleep again) and then set strong intention to lucid dream and again you can visualize the last dreams and imagine you get lucid or just use a mantra falling asleep again.
