Thread: Why would anyone want to lucid dream, surely it's undesirable?

I haven't progressed to that level*. So far I use my will to steer my body. That works quite well.

*It is of course possible to will yourself to hit yourself on the head with a brick, during day time, so that you wake up several hours later, at night (with a terrible headache), thus having turned day into night in an instant. However, I wouldn't advocate it.
So ... is this the real universe, or is it just a preliminary study?

Oh.. I wouldn't go that far. Taking sleeping aid usually helps me achieve the effect without it being too painful. ^^'

On a more serious note, the waking reality is pretty malleable, just not as much as a lucid dream where you are highly aware. It's like a space inhabited by billions of lucid-dreamers, semi-lucid dreamers, and some even going about their day autonomously without much conscious awareness much like in regular dreams. Since it's a space made up of several conscious people, the reality is that much more stable. Since I had lucid dreams that were very stable I don't find this an impossibility.

I guess it depends on your emotional need to have the reality influenced since the waking reality is not easily influenced.

I have one experience of waking life dream control that's still fresh in my mind. After my Kana passed away, I was in and out of the hospital a lot for my own treatments. One day, in waking, I was in the waiting area of my hospital wth my mom for over an hour waiting to see my psychiatrist following a suicide attempt that my famaly managed to stop. I was tearing up because Kana wasn't beside me for support and I didn't handle hospitals well because of PTSD as Kana left me while in hospital ICU and I was in a waiting area similar to the one I was in right then that time too. I looked at a ceiling light and wished with all my heart... "If you are still watching over me, if you are not really gone, please flicker that light. It will mean so much to me." It didn't flicker. I felt disheartned and started crying. I was on the brink of passing out and possibly having another seizure. Just in case anyone is wondering... It was before I was on strong anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds. Anyway, a nurse with few attendants rushed to us and suggested that she'll move up my appointment with my doctor and in the meantime, they were going to take me to Casualty/ER. Suddenly the whole waiting room lights, not 1, but all 25+ ceiling lights, flickered off and then came back on in random. Coincidence? Maybe, but it helped me calm down and made me realize we are more than just helpless passengers in this reality.

I ended up here after a brief look at another LD forum. OP posted the exact post there (word for word). I think it is likely a sincere attempt at understanding a very complex thing. This discussion has been helpful to me as well.

I'm glad I landed here, btw.

We're glad you did too. An uneducated guess about your name - are you by chance a landscaper and photographer (lens-capper?)

That is a VERY astute observation, Darkmatters.......I spent most of my life as a landscaper. I started writing and recording music in the 1970's and thought it would be cool to take a nom de plume so, yeah...Len Scaper was born. I write and record now as Leonard Scaper.

My real name is Steve Gleason. Pleased to meet you.

Lol - do you spell that Lynyrd Skypyrd on the albums?

I also thought it possible you might be a landscape photographer, but the 'per' ending really suggested landscaper. I guess my own photography hobby made me see the "lens" that way.

obviously it is desirable. there wouldn't of been a ton of research on it. if it wasn't.
hmm. i like your terminology. waking self me. interesting. you know all that is of that self? your waking self? achieving lucidity allows you to learn even more about your self. in great depth. your dream ego. most people choose to become ignorant of the dream ego. it greatly saddens me. your *version* of your waking self. sounds selfish to me. and lazy. if you never understand or delve deeper. into the ego of your waking-self. you will truly never understand your self. know thy self is a very common saying these days.
being lucid isn't all about control or manipulation. observing the different aspects of your dream-ego. the puzzle lies.
i know who i am. both waking and sleeping. one is not greater then the other. i wont hide from the truths. you are right in saying dream are to be experienced. but! with lucidity i can take it to new levels. to new levels you couldn't possibly understand. for you wont choose to learn there's other parts of your being also known as a psyche. you can explore who you truly are. you truly are three parts, *whole* you can be explored. you can communicate with your subconscious. rather then pretend it does not exist and be ignorant of the other parts of your self. its kinda like a insult to your waking self if you dont explore your self.
while i explored my self. in my journey i have discovered knowledge/wisdom. it's not all about control for the seeker within for i have discovered. its not i who makes the sky blue. the grass green.
