It's because it takes around 90 minutes before you reach the first REM cycle when you go to sleep. It's much easier to WILD when you're in a REM cycle, because you will be sure that you will be dreaming, also the dream will be much more vivid than in a non-REM dream. According to what I've read, most lucid dreams occur in REM sleep.

Luminous nailed it. Here is a link to dream stages that shows why it is harder to WILD immediatly when going to sleep just incase you are interested:

Not only is starting at the beginning of a cycle long and arduous, but the rewards are meager. Why focus for 80 minutes only to receive 10 minutes of low quality dreaming? Why not, instead, focus for 30 minutes or less, and get at least 30 minutes of the good stuff out of the deal?

i used to never WBTB, since i didnt have enough time to sleep really, but i have insomnia so spending so much time and commitment right when i first went to sleep wasnt that difficult... but it is MUCH more difficult. after being successful with some WILDs right as i go to bed (abra is correct. the dreams are much shorter, and mine were still very vivid, but didnt seem so imaginative as usual...), the WBTB experiences i have are almost always successful and effortless.

But... And prove me wrong. If you practice at the evening, you can better improve your relaxation skills, your concentration skills and overall feeling of falling asleep. So even if it is harder, and takes longer, it gives you more time to practice.

So well. Its harder, but more rewarding in long term in my opinion.
