I was just reading that many insomniacs, when photographed throughout the night, were actually shown to have slept soundly most of the night, even though they claim not to have gotten a single wink of sleep.. It turns out they were only dreaming that they were awake!

Kind of sounds like what you just went through.

your body is virtually paralyzed during your sleep
likely to prevent your body from acting out aspects of your dreams
      From:
      wikipedia

“Glands begin to secrete a hormone that helps induce sleep and neurons send signals to the spinal cord which cause the body to relax and later become essentially paralyzed.”

I find that sometimes we tend to get stuck in dreaming maybe as a result of the above ^, but feel/think we are still lying in our beds waiting to dream. Dream content such as your "hiding under your blanket" & feeling of fear seem apparent.

Lucid dreaming seems well within reach for you, just try to move around and get past your fear.
