It's like that at first for a lot of people. You just have to keep trying new things every lucid dream.

Trust me, you get more control as you go on.

Awareness comes with time and experience, but belief is everything in all of lucid dreaming, especially control. You have to have next to no doubt at all, "Free Your Mind." One thing that helps people when they are starting is to give a reason for the control. Say if you wanted to see someone, you might say,"Hey, isn't *whoever* behind that door right behind me?" It works wonders.

i actually had my first LD last night as well.... though it ended short after i realized it was a dream.... i looked at myself in a mirror and my face was disfigured so i closed my eyes and tried to open them but wound up opening my real eyes and woke up..

any tips on maintaining a lucid after realizing its a dream?

I've always had control problems but last night I was able to make everything in my LD extremely clear, almost more than real life, if that is possible. I simply knelt down and felt the grass beneath me.

However I did lose lucidity in the end so I still have my problems.

yeah i just had a tip similar to that... she called it "grounding yourself"... like get the feel of your surroundings in the dream... she sais it helps make the dream much clearer and a little easier to maintain...

Because you don't understand what control is or how it works.
This is a bit of a long read, but it should help. http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ad.php?t=57283

It's fun to control dreams yes, and I used to work on it a lot too after I started. But now it's just fun to explore the world's the the brain creates. So you might find that you enjoy that also after awhile. But you have total freedom of choice...
