      psycologist? O.o

well, today i went to my psycologist and i decide to ask her, " Hey i read in the internet that you can control your dreams, is that true?" , she answered me in a laughing manner "no, its impossible because you are not conscious during a dream. I was thinking ---> "lol i think i should switch psycologists cause she doesnt really know about this stuff".

Has anyone asked there psycologist ( if ur seeing one for any reason) about Lucid dreams?

Wow, your psycologist sorta, stinks... Hah, I took psycology for ONE year, that is it, and (believe it or not) I learned a little about lucid dreaming. (Too bad they didn't expand much on it. >.< )

I wish I could visit a psycologist just for the heck of it, but I never had. Either way, you don't need a psycologist to tell you that lucid dreams exist, just ask on of the MANY members on this forum! (Myself included. )

I don't know if I'm doing it 'wrong', but every time I talk to people about Lucid Dreaming, they just go "Oh. I didn't think that was possible. Cool."

Alot of people here seems to either be surrounded by ignorant people, or their doing it wrong.

Maybe if you asked if she knew about Lucid Dreaming, and then began to explain it...

I think ignorance has a lot to do with it because many people still think lucid dreaming is witchcraft (maybe only in America, IDK). I just don't talk to people about it.

For someone who has not experienced a lucid dream then it would be hard to understand what you mean.

For instance if I told you I could eat a plain cracker and make it taste like a strawberry you would have a hard time believing me. (No, I can't)

Thats the equivalent to saying dreams can be controlled; taking something which is normally bland and making it interesting.

Without having experienced it it's hard to appreciate.

LOL! That is exactly it. Many people don't even think they dream -- simply because they never remember any dreams!

To tell them that I can swallow a sunset, make monsters explode, fly into a tornado, or fight Nazis while in a dream that I know is a dream is a little too much for most people to absorb quickly. When I talked to my mom about LDing I did it this way:
me: Hey mom, you know I have a lot of nightmares.
mom: Yeah. I'm so sorry about that.
me: I've found a way to help them.
mom: Really? It isn't a drug is it?
me: LOL. No. I've learned that I can recognize when I'm dreaming.
      mom: What?
me: Well, since my nightmares happen over and over I just started to notice it. To go "Hey! I just had this dream last night! It must be a dream now!"
mom: Oh. I think I get it.
me: And since I know it is a dream I know I don't have to be afraid, since nothing can hurt me.
mom: Wow. That must feel amazing.

With the way I introduced the idea and talked about it she found the whole idea of LDing to be fairly logical. Even though she is quite fundamentally religious and believes in demons and all that, she found nothing wrong with LDing because I described it in a very simple, unremarkable manner.

Now, if I told her about some of my um... more um... colorful LDs and LD exploits, she would probably feel differently about it.

What amazes me is that people believe in demons, but not dreaming Just can't wrap my head around that

I'd stay with your psychologist if you like her otherwise. There's so little scientific evidence that most of the ones I've encountered, who are highly educated and top notch, just don't buy into it. I brought it up in a class recently and my prof knew about LDing, but just didn't really buy in. She thinks LDs are just those dreams where you are dreaming about LDing. I'm thinking of offering to teach her Just to open up her world

If you really wanna be able to converse with her on it, I'd point her in the direction of some primary lit. And if she gets in to it (just believing it) see if she can be brought around to recommending it to other patients (well I guess depending on the problems with most of her clients... probably wouldn't help if she specializes in schizophrenia or something )

Same with me! That was actually the first time I'd ever heard about it. We didn't study LDing for that long either, but it was still kinda cool.

Yeah, I guess I agree with everyone else here. You should try educating her on it; Expand her world a bit.

My psych profs were total behaviorists, and the only cogs I know don't believe in LDing. You guys are lucky as hell.

My psychiatrist told me that lucid dreaming is a way to deal with nightmares related to PTSD.

My counselor had never heard of LDing and I've had to educate her. She is cool. So, if you like the psych just try to educate her.

Yea the only problem with PTSD is you really want them to have good dram control so they don't freak out
