How long can you hold an Idea?

      Hi everyone!
These days I was thinking about the fact that there must be some relation between our capability of holding an Idea (with no losing attention) in our awake-life and the capability of holding the Idea of "It's a dream" during an LD.
I mean, usually, when I RC, I realize it's not a dream. Holding this Idea in my brain is no longer needed during my awake-life. But when I try to hold this Idea (with no distraction or at least taking it back the soon as posible if I get distracted) it is very similar to what happens to me when I'm LDing.

Does it happens to you too? the more you can hold an Idea the more your LD's last? The easier you can be distracted in your awake life the easier you can lose lucidity?

hm.. well Im not sure about the lucidity part, but I have a somewhat short attention span.. and things in my dreams tend to change quite frequently making it hard to write them out. For example, I could go in through a door, look around, and turn around to go back out that door to find either the door is gone or when I go outside the things out there are totally different

Could be I have a rather long attention span and can hold an idea for quite some time. In my dream the environments don't change often and the duration for which I stay lucid without getting distracted last quite a long time. So you could be on to something.

I often revisit places in my dreams. They're quite stable in that sense.

I have no trouble remembering my lucidity when I'm lucid. I just keep it in the back of my head.

I usually don't loose lucidity- I am aware that everything around me is a dream, however in the few times I did loose it the dream usually was still very cool and vivid. Anyhow gtg have an LD, cheers!

I think theres a definite relationship

thats why dream yogis spend a large part of their day just staring and observing every minute detail. and that was the real attention of the RC, was to PAY MORE ATTENTION to reality. Which in turns mean, you can pay more attention in dreams

so I think the real goal is paying more attention, not necessarily holding an idea for a long time. but being consciously aware of ourselves and our environment and our relationship with it. if you could do this all the time, you would always know when you are dreaming

of course, thats not easy. our minds tend to quickly stray away, I guess that why they're yogis

I think you made a brilliant connection there. That is exactly what dream yoga is about like jurorararara said. Meditation is the art of attention afterall, and holding one idea in the head all the time is what meditation is about. Buddha for example, got enlightened by holding his attention on his breath 24/7. It's called Vipanassa I think. Anyway, dream yoga aclaims this theory you came up with is the key to lucidity. Here's the blog of a guy who used to post here a lot and who was really into dream yoga.. http://luciddreamyoga.blogspot.com/. I find this theory to be very true, being able to hold one idea in the head really helps to keep you lucid..

The site seems to be usefull. I will take a time to read it all.

hmm.. It seems that I do have to work in my awake life, specially in my attention span to hold an Idea, in order to improve the quality of my LD's.

Although I don't agree with some points of yoga philosophy, specially regarding to both death and rebirth, I found very usefull their calm abiding "Zhine" method.
In a fast search, I found this: http://www.plotinus.com/zhine_tibeta..._yoga_copy.htm
I think it's enough for working with our brain to improve our attention span and then, to hold an Idea in order to get longer LDs as well.
      Cheerz!!
