      A DILD without reality checks?

On Thursday night, I dreamed I was with someone, yet I was lucid. I did a reality check after realizing I was lucid, yet when I tried to change location via the spinning technique, I woke up.

I did this again later the same night, but the same result.

Was this a lucid, or was it something else?

If you are aware that you are dreaming, then yes it's a LD.

Realize you're lucid? ... No, you must realize you are dreaming. But I think that's what you meant.

You can either do a reality check to see if you are dreaming, or use a reality check to confirm that you are dreaming. Both ways are fine.

The purpose of a reality check is just to increase your awareness in general, and then to serve as a tool to help you actually test it. Yes, sometimes you will randomly RC and will become lucid from that. Other times, if your awareness is good enough, you'll certainly just realize you're dreaming without even having to bother with formalities or questions. You just KNOW. Sometimes this happens, and you foster a little doubt so you do a RC to help convince yourself and build confidence. Either way, RCing is fantastic for stabilizing a dream and your lucidity. So, congrats on the spontaneous lucid

      PIPLUP!!!!!

      *ahem*

Just had to get that out there.

Like the others have said, you did have a Lucid. Almost, if not all of mine were like this to. It could actually be that you will become Lucid by this a LOT. But I'd advise not to rely on spinning to change anything. It tends to just flat out end the dream, just like you've already experienced.
