Thread: consious during deep sleep

So the other night I was sleeping when I slowly became aware I was sleeping, even though I was in a really deep sleep. After that I kinda forced a dream to form but the quality was really bad. I'm almost positive I wasn't in REM sleep. This has been happening a lot lately, too. I become conscious of myself thinking while I'm in a deep sleep, then that triggers a low quality lucid dream. Can anyone explain this?
