The hallucinations from LSD or similar psychedelics are actually quite different from hypnagonic hallucinations (at least from my experience.)
Hypnagonic states usually are a jumble of recognizable images from waking life. Ie, if I was eating a bunch of pizza earlier in the day I would see a pizza really clearly as I am falling asleep.
Psychedelic drugs induce images behind closed eyes (and sometimes overlaying your external environment) that are of a different quality.
LSD will produce really elaborate geometric patterns that seem to be made out of intense light/energy. Think of the designs on a persian carpet, but with almost infinite complexity. Mushrooms tend to be more recognizable images and a little less abstract, but still very different from dream images. Jeweled landscapes, insectoid faces, mandalic space buddhas and strange stuff like that.
And yes, you cannot fall asleep on either. However, tryptamines such as mushrooms are reported by some to greatly increase your dream states for weeks after you take them.
