      Levitation Problems in DILD

I usually become aware of a DILD when I begin levitating. Well, it's not actually levitating. It's more like floating uncontrollably. I feel like a hot air balloon when this happens. The problem I'm experiencing with this is that most of the time I end up in Power Lines. It would be more of a nightmare if I didn't realize I was dreaming. Mostly it just frustrates me. Lately, I've been gaining some control over the floating. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why I'm always floating away, and why I end up in power lines 90% of the time.

Sounds like you have a good dream sign, mate. What I would suggest is when you realize you're dreaming, bring yourself back to the ground. There are literally dozens of ways to do this. Manipulation of gravity is one way. Alternately, you can use telekinesis to pull yourself downward, or pull some rope out of your pocket and lasso something, or any of numerous other methods. This could be your first exercise in dream control. Or, if you feel like having fun, drift up to the power lines and swing from them, monkey-style.

      Good luck!

Here is non-standard advice on countering flying problems: try to play a game where you can fly, or use Active Worlds (3D-chat) for this purpose. In AW you can fly and go through walls, so it can quickly help to make it "regular" for you.

I've run into power lines many times... for a period of a few years it happened all the time! I couldn't seem to go over or under them. I wonder if they represent something... social ties or something?

Often when my dreams are very vivid I can float or drift slowly - like a hot air balloon as you so perfectly put it, but sometimes I can rocket through the sky at incredible speeds... but those dreams tend to be less vivid, more low rendered.

I have had that experience once, didn't hit no power lines, though. What I did to solve this was to imagine that I was wearing a helmet which made me float, then I just unhooked it and fell to the ground . This might seem a little far fetched but it worked for me. I like using imagined objects to control dreams, for exemple putting on or off glasses has enabled me to increase the quality of my vision. Guess it works cause there is a logic to items having influence on us and stuff around us.

I don't mind the floating even though I do feel a bit out of control sometimes. Other times I can control it which is very cool. It could lead to flight. It's the power lines that piss me off because I usually encounter them when I'm out of control. No doubt they represent some kind of fear that I don't understand. I find it slightly uncanny that Darkmatters actually claims to share this dream symbol, and that we seem to have the same experience.

Ok. I guess if these power lines represent some kind of fear, either you have to face it somehow within the dream or deal with it in waking life.

I just saw that Coradon has dreamed the same thing, but overcame it with his powers of super-lucidity!!

There was one time I really overcame it... and it was a dream where I might have been somewhat lucid. I was drifting along, getting away from this plumber who was trying to make me endlessly flush a communal urinal in the middle of a store (with a long line of men and women and children all waiting to use it)... Instead I drifted around the store and out the door down the street, and then I encountered a power line (just a single one). It was RIGHT in front of me, RIGHT at my level!! And now the plumber was coming after me with a bunch of chinese coolies in pointed hats who were his cronies. They were throwing bricks at me, and as the first brick got close I stopped it in the air with mind power and made it start spinning end over end, then I transformed it rapidly into a bunch of little items... a tiny elephant sculpture, a spinning top, and a few other things. I turned it into different materials too, one of them being gold.

But by now a bunch more bricks were flying at me, so I just froze them and made them all drop out of the air. I noticed the plumber standing apart from the coolies looking at me like he was surprised I could do these things, but he seemed determined to get me down and make me perform meaningless trivial labor. And I was starting to get the idea he was something a lot more powerful than a plumber... he seemed like he was beginning to glow slightly.

He did something and instantly I was standing on the ground in the center of a big empty warehouse space... dark all around except for a circle of light where I stood with the coolies, all in a circle. We all had hand carts with a box on each cart, and we were doing this singalong thing... it wasn't really a circle, but more like a letter C - with a gap in it. The guy at the 'front' of the line would start singing a little song and the rest of us would sing along as we all pushed our hand carts along and walked around the circle. Then he'd step forward across the gap in the C and become the last in line, and the next guy would become the leader and do his song. I was at the 'end' of the line, and when I got up to the front I just stopped and let go of my hand cart. I was curious about what was in the box on it, so I made it open with mind power and made the contents float up into the air. It was just some sort of solid cube of unidentified material, so I turned it into a bunch of stuff.. at one point I had it all disassembled into a myriad of tiny complex components and made them all go together into some kind of machine.

Anyway, now the 'plumber' was done with impersonating a minor character and he started to glow brightly and his uniform shed away. He was something like a god or something, and I was amazed at the sense of his power, but I refused to do these meaningless little tasks he set for me.

Incidentally, I ran into him in a couple of later dreams and he was sitting on the ground with his head in his hand sadly as if disappointed in me. If I manage to become really lucid I want to try to find him and ask him who he is and what the hell was up with all that crap!

Ok sorry... I was just going to write about the power line thing, but I got caught up in the rest of the dream. This one really felt like one of my most 'important' dreams.

      ....

Oh, and now I realize, I guess I didn't really 'overcome' the power line obstacle, but the plumber just teleported me away from it.

That's a fascinating dream! I wonder if you're opposed to holding a job like I am. The plumber seems to be wanting you to work. He may be your higher-self in disguise. The ritual in the warehouse seems to be his way of showing the harmony in labor. The way you described him as being disappointed indicates that you're not getting his lesson. It might be something we have in common. I'm thinking that if we can deduce the meaning of these power lines we can determine what it is we're afraid of and get on with some real lucid flying. Feel free to PM me.

I think you're definitely right... I'm not sure exactly when I had this dream... but I went through a few jobs pretty fast and just quit them or let myself get fired before I managed to hold onto one for a good long time.

What really gets me about the dream though is.. ok, if the plumber is my higher self or whatever, how come the work he wanted me to do was all ridiculous meaningless busy work? Pointless repetitive bullshit work. Of course hey... that's what most work is (and school too). I always thought my drifting away and having mental powers to transform things represented my artistic ability. At around the same time I was having a lot of Authority Figure dreams, and they always seemed to want me to do meaningless repetitive labor when I had better things in mind.

As for the flying... it wasn't like all my flying dreams got me hung up in power lines, just certain ones. There are like three or four different levels I find myself flying at... one is very close to the ground, like walking or even crawling level, then there's the power line level, and sometimes I can go way up in the sky for unlimited flying fun.

I never thought of how this might be related, but when I got into photography I did a whole series of powerline pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/1257928...7594453931023/

I've long had a fascination for telephone poles and power lines -- wonder if it's because of those dreams?

      ....

About the meaning of running into power lines in a flying dream... I suspect it's just a very loose symbolism for bullshit getting in your way... like when you can't walk right or run right in a dream... you know, just crap getting in the way and slowing you down. I kind of doubt it has any more specific meaning than that. But yeah, now that I've thought about it a lot thanks to this thread, it seems the plumber just wanted me to develop my discipline. Heh... too bad he was such an asshole about it and couldn't pick decent jobs!!

Yes, I'll give you that. The power lines definitely represent an obstacle to the freedom of flight. I finally did a Google search on this topic today (don't know why I hadn't before), and found that this is not an uncommon dream pattern. Many people dream of floating into power lines. Which has peaked my curiosity. I find it fascinating that symbolism seems to have a collective mechanic (we all have the same recurring dream), but what really intrigues me is: why is it always a power line? Why not a mountain, or a 747, or a brick wall? And to really make matters interesting, everyone describes a sensation of, not flying, but floating. Oh well, I'll leave it at that before this ends up getting moved to deep dreams.

      BTW, nice photos.

Hey great call on googling it!!! So... very common huh? You know, since I found this message board I've been learning that a lot of my dreams that I always thought were totally unique actually fit common dream patterns. It's very reassuring in a way. Dreams and the subconscious are like the last unexplored frontier, but thanks to this site it's being explored and mapped out by lots of people and the results shared here.

      ...

Ok, I can only conjecture a little about why power lines...

It's not only that they're unnatural... so are buildings and 747s like you said. But then, if you're flying (or drifting... ) a building or even a mountain wouldn't be that hard to get around. Power lines are kind of like fences. Hmmm... probably our most usual view of the sky in waking life is from the street, with power lines always overhead all but unnoticed. Ok... that's about all I got... not much. Heh.... I wonder what got in the way of these drifting dreams before the invention of the telegraph? Would be VEEERY interesting to find old accounts of similar dreams.

      ...

Ok, came up with something else. One reason power lines make such a great obstacle is because you can SEE the sky beyond them... it;s like freedom beckoning but made impossible by these few simple black lines. Great symbolism really... more effective than something that completely blocks the view of the sky. It's a pretty easy 'render' for the dreaming mind too, but that doesn't seem to matter... the mind can come up with incredibly detailed stuff in an instant.
