A few questions about chaos magick.

So, I was inspired by a few posts in here to give this another shot and I have a few questions for anyone who is knowledgeable in the subject. First, as I understand it, you gotta have a system of beliefs full of deities and spirits and all that stuff from which to work. What does someone like me who has been an atheist for their entire life do? Is it okay to make up your own religion or something or do you still have to adhere to someone else's system of beliefs. Also, I've once read someone say that there's some kind of special formula for making a sigil where you take the letters out of your intent and arrange the in some way. Could you just write them in some way that's meaningful to you like in japanese kanji or other languages that you don't understand. That's it for now.

Hypothetically it would work to make a kanji if you wanted. The purpose of a sigil is to continuously insert the affirmation into your unconscious. You make a symbol because it can bypass the critical barrier since your conscious mind will begin to overlook it or forget what it means but your unconscious mind will continue to have the association. As far as beliefs, you don't actually need any but they're pretty helpful. And you don't actually have to have been raised Christian to use things like Christ, God and Angels so long as you were raised in a society that gave them power because they'll retain powerful associations in your unconscious. You unconscious doesn't understand true and false, it only understands relationships so if you were raised with Christian beliefs in the movies you watched, music you listened to and books you read, then your unconscious mind will relate God to power, thus making God a good technique with which to tap into power. Most of our unconscious minds do not associate our individual selves with much power, so we need to trick them. However, if you were raised with, say, Star Wars being a big influence, you could easily replace God with the Force and have the same effect.

Yeah it's an effective method. The most effective method is building up the habit of doing reality checks though.

I used a sigil to help me remember my dreams once and it worked very well. I don't know about lucidity, I would recommend reality checks over sigils for that personally, but do what you think will work.
