My DG was a trashy, 21yr old looking, kung fu student.
That was outrageous. (Astonishing, really.)
Now, for visualization techiques, it basically consists in calming down your physical senses and replacing them by your inner/imaginary/mental senses, so you can experience the specific situation related to your specific (or not) objective.
It is also important to link the meaning of your action in your visualization to the elements within it, i.e. you can picture a target on a wall, with the distance between you and the wall being proportional to the difficulty that casts you aside from your objective. Then, you picture a dart in your hand. All you have to do is throw it and hit the 100 points mark on the target. The more mental strenght, courage, confidence, etc. you put on your dart, the easier and the better you hit the target.
The thing is, it has to FEEL REAL. The more realistic you illustrate it in your mind, the more it affects you mind itself, which makes VERY IMPORTANT to have well trained inner senses for that matter.
On the subject of contacting your subconscious, you'd simply need to manifest yourself somewhere else, a place you could call your own sanctuary, creating your inner temple would be a good choice. (a place with the intentions of prevent you from invading thoughts, you are the boss within your domain.) and simply call out to it, then it shall appear to you.
Now if it goes wrong, then you'd have complicating and scrambling thoughts enough to make it so the connection doesn't work.
Just be honest and deeply talk to yourself.
