Failed WILD, What did I do wrong?

Last night I wanted to try doing a WILD. I've stumbled on doing it twice, and decided it would be a good thing to learn how to do it at will. Well, I sat totally still and became numb to the point of pain for at least an hour (I could tell because of the cuckoo clock). I got fleeting images, but they were in a really low... resolution, I guess. No color, just fleeting images and ideas. Does that count as HI? If I just let the images come, I'd lose consciousness, but any analysis, and I go back to a blackish/light flashing backdrop. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong, or anything I could practice? (I'm thinking about trying a little WBTB, but I'd like to try to shy away from that with school starting soon.)

      P.S. Dream Views FTW!

WBTB is (nearly) the only way to effectively WILD. You will find it extremely difficult, bordering on impossible, without a WBTB -- unless you're incredibly sleep deprived. WILD works by slipping right into a dream from the on-set of sleep, and most importantly most of the dreams that we remember and become lucid in are during REM-periods; which occur, roughly, once every 90 minutes.

That said, by attempting to WILD without a WBTB, not only are you going through the entire process of falling asleep (which can take a while), but you won't be entering into a REM period, which may cause the dream to be very low in terms of clarity, vividness and even recall.

WBTB is definitely the way to go.

      Whats your sleep schedule like?

Thank you very much for you input... implementing WBTB shouldn't be too difficult, just perhaps more a pain. right now, I usually go to bed/sleep anywhere from 12:00 to 2:00 and get up around 10:00 to 11:00. Once school starts, I'd like to make it from about 9:00-10:00 to 5:00-6:00. Is it okay to use an alarm clock for WBTB? Thank you again, and good dreaming.

Alarm Clock shouldn't be a problem. Because it jolts you into an awakened state, I wouldn't recommend being awake anymore than 15-20 minutes before going back to bed to finish the WBTB.
