Introduction and Question.. All rolled into one.

Hello everyone. I've been very interested in lucid dreams for the past 3 months or so and have experienced three but one doesn't really count because I got so excited. The ones I did have were very interesting but still sort of blurry. I've been having problems with dreaming lately probably because of light drinking which I have mostly quit in pursuit of greater dream control.

My Question: I have been having trouble even completing full nights of sleep lately so I purchased Valerian (500mg) and Melatonin (3mg) to help me sleep. I was hoping they would also promote lucid dreaming. I have heard Melatonin increases the chances of remembering dreams and Valerian increases the probability of lucid dreaming. So my question is... Can I take them together and how will this affect lucid dreaming? Any advice would be nice. The bottles say to take one Melatonin and 3 Valerian. What do you all think?

      Hi, welcome to dreamviews!

Before I say anything else, all three of your lucid dreams count. Regardless of the length, or how long you were able to stay in the dream, you were still lucid. You still knew that you were dreaming.

From what I've heard, melatonin or valerian will not promote lucidity because they mainly bring on sleepiness, not awareness (which is required to gain lucidity via the DILD technique). Melatonin might even reduce how many dreams you can recall each night.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Ok thanks a lot the info. Maybe I will try using just Valerian for the next few weeks and see how it works!

No problem. Melatonin might affect some people differently, though, so don't hesitate to try it as well. I'd try them separately, so you can tell which effects come from which supplement.
