Hey Matt, welcome to Dreamviews.
Before I got into lucid dreaming, I too didn't pay much attention to my dreams. Then came that one lucid and I was like, "hey, I should try doing this as a hobby!" And, obviously it stuck. Dreams are amazing, you can do anything you want in them as long as you believe you can. You can be as creative as you want. Answering your question about when you first become lucid, yes, it's usually like a sudden realization. "Oh my god, I'm dreaming!"
To combat a common misconception, I'm going to add that lucidity is caused by awareness and not simply doing reality checks over and over again. They're mostly to confirm the fact that you're dreaming. You can do reality checks over and over in a dream without becoming lucid, if you're not conscious enough in the first place.
As for where to start... Like Matte87 and Brunor2 said, the DV wiki is probably the first place to look. There's a list of abbreviations used around the site, tutorials on different lucid dream induction techniques, and a bunch of other stuff.
It might take a while to get your first lucid, but keep at it. It's a great experience! For now, start a dream journal and record the dreams you have each night. Recall is important since you can forget lucids - you might even wake up knowing you had one, but can't remember the details. And read through the tutorials, too.
Feel free to PM me or another dream guide like Matte87 if you need help with something or have questions.
Good luck!
