Hi Em and welcome to DV! You are right to be intrigued as it's the most awesome hobby in the world! It does take dedication and time, but the rewards are totally worth it. Why waste 30% of your life sleeping and having fragments of dreams when you can train yourself to have adventures? If you haven't already, I suggest you take a look at the Wiki section.
