It sounds like you're remembering certain parts of the dream, but other parts you're just filling in with what you "think" or "want" to be correct. It's not quite a conscious effort, but somewhere in between... I definitely know the feeling that you're describing, but it's rather hard to explain!
The best thing to do is just record more details of the dream, and to do this as soon as you can after waking. This way, you'll end up filling in less so-called-false details because there'll be more dream memory there to reference from, and less "holes". You can do that, or simply stop yourself and recall the visual aspects of the dream - what everything looked like, where you went, and what you did. Again, this will work best if you think about your dream(s) right after you wake up, because elements of a dream can change or be forgotten over time.
