Well if you wake up, then you're no longer in a dream. Being lucid means you're in a dream and you're aware of it. Depending on how good your recall is dictates how well you will remember the dream. Waking up out of REM is going to make it a lot easier to recall, though.

If you want to do a WBTB, try waking up before the REM cycle (which is when dreaming takes place).
