Lost control of dream - hand went through an object

So I recognized I was in a dream last night. I did the rubbing hand technique to kind of get acclimated to the dream. I started to get a feel for the environment, and then went I went to grab for a chair my hand went through it and it immediately woke me up. Any advice or knowledge on why this occurred? Thanks!

Dreams differ from reality in the sense odd things might happen. Although they are an attempt of your brain to recreate the real world, there are violations which results in strange things like what just happened to you. The best way to prevent this is to clearly focus your intention. Try being aware of what surrounds you in the dream, specifically any object you interact with. Maybe you were in a way of "I'll grab this chair to see what happens" or even in a still incredible motion.

I also don't know if this is one of your first lucids, but if so, it's normal to wake up in the first moments, you'll get the hang with practice good luck!

Hey lucidous! Congrats on that lucid!

It seems that the shock from your hand going through the chair probably woke you up, coupled with the excitement of actually being lucid. Thats not a problem and is something you can work on.

Without knowing a little more about your mindset at the time, its hard to say what the problem was. if you were having thoughts like "this isn't real, none of this is real" then its likely that this could cause you to not be able to physically touch anything.

as Zoth00 says, try to focus on any task that your doing, this should help in future

Simply because you can breathe, doesn't mean your alive, or that you really live....

Either you didn't have confidence in it all being real enough to actually be able to touch things like the guys told you, or you weren't far enough into the dream for your sense of touch to be active enough. When you start to wake up from a dream you have trouble feeling anything in the dream. Your vision gets blurry and dark, your sense of touch is gone, your hearing goes away and you can't smell or taste much. You can counter this by using those senses, really focusing on them.

I assure you that it was just a fluke, don't worry! Next dream you'll have a better time Good luck!

Maybe this was just a symptom of waking up from the dream. There is a lot you can do to keep yourself from waking prematurely, but when the dream is over, we wake up. There is not a lot you can do about it. It is easiest to become lucid during the last few moments of a dream, when your mind is already waking up. This causes a lot of brief lucid dreams. Don't beat yourself up about it. It may have just been bad timing.
