First lucid dream was terrifying, and from what I've read it's really rare for this to happen?

Ok so I have been trying to Lucid Dream for around a month now. I have been doing reality checks hourly, keeping my journal, and messing around with bin-aural beats. I had a 7 hour car ride today so I figured I'd try it, no luck. I came home and checked out some new Theta beats and it worked. I'm an extremely open minded person so this in no way deterred me from wanting to continue. Okay, cutting to the chase...

So this is how it happened. I laid down and put a bin-aural beat on, different from the typical few I listen to. This one worked really fast I began to feel really relaxed in bed. I began counting each inhale I took, somewhere in the midst of this I lost consciousness and began dreaming. I was at a girl I knows house, and I also know her boyfriend. It was her birthday party and she asked me to go in the back and get her friend because the strippers were coming soon. I said "Brittany where's Dave (boyfriend) at?" Then I came to the sudden realization (It was the craziest feeling, I can't even describe it but I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.) that this was about to be a lucid dream. I noticed the TV was on but no sound and it was lighting everyone's faces in an odd way. The second I went Lucid all these Rottweilers came running in and began attacking me. I fell onto the floor, one was biting my arm. I looked up and everyone's faces were now horribly disfigured. I then began trying to punch the dogs but my punches were incredibly weak, so I decided I wanted super powers. I didn't know what I wanted but I didn't have much time to think. It ended up being a "use the force" type deal. I began using this on the dogs and it was all really gruesome. I could control myself but not the environment. I was too frantic to even really try. The dogs just kept coming and coming, I flew through the roof and they were still after me. Somehow I ended up still in the house. Through-out the dream I began to lose my lucidity because I was too busy fighting off these dogs. I was still semi-lucid and I said to myself that's enough it's time to wake up and I woke up.

I looked down at the beat I was listening to and it was at 11-minutes 24-seconds. The time gap to me is mind blowing. I got my journal out and wrote all this down, and now here I am. One of the coolest, if not, theee coolest experience I've had. It was completely mind blowing. I just hope the next one turns out a bit more pleasant.

Is this at all normal? This was like a bad trip but worse lol. I try to take something positive from every experience like this though and I am guessing my sub conscience and conscience are under some type of unrest with each other. Any comments or advice?

      Thanks, Zack

Hey Zack! Welcome to the forum!

The experience you describe is normal. Sadly you had a rough dream for a first lucid but at least you exhibited some control over the elements. You already have a good foundation to work with.

While you prepare for a lucid attempt you can visualize the kind of dream you want or use a mantra to help create a lucid environment or situation.

For troubling situations it may help to think about them while awake. Superhero powers like comic-book heroes or The Matrix can help get you out of trouble quickly. Your mind knows what should happen when you use those powers so it's easy to use them in a dream.

Try reading some comics or something related to special powers. It might help implant the idea in your mind. The MILD Tutorial mght help as well.

      Welcome to DV!

Yeah it's normal but it depends on the person. I never have any lucid nightmares and they should appear less frequently as you get more confident and more used to being lucid. Don't doubt yourself or worry that it might happen again, that might just make it worse. Not all experiences related to dreaming are pleasant, but I love your attitude! That's exactly how you should face them, with curiosity. When you enter Sleep Paralysis for the first time you'll shrug it off and go into a dream in no time with that attitude. People tend to freak out because it's scary but the truth is that nothing can hurt you anyways since it's not real, it's just one big awesome experience.

Good luck and like melanie said, we're here to help you out. Feel free to ask anything at all

It won't let me post links because I just became a member here. If you Youtube "1hr Theta Binaural Beat Session" it should come up. It has a trippy picture of a tree in the center of a video and then it swirls down around the trunk.

Melanie and Matt thanks for the encouragement and information. This website seems like a plethora of knowledge and info. There is definitely a lot I can learn here.

To people asking for the link, here is the one I think Zack is referring to: 1hr Theta Binaural Beat Session (7hz) ~ Pure - YouTube
And you can convert YouTube vids to mp3s using listentoyoutube.com; that's how I get a lot binaural beats on my iPod.

Anyway, welcome to DV, Zack! Sorry your first lucid experience was an unpleasant one. From what I've heard that's not entirely uncommon. In fact, it scares a lot of people away from trying again, so you have the right attitude! I imagine it gets easier to prevent bad experiences over time, so just keep going at it.

      Bad experience? That was awesome!
Last lucid dream I had happened in my first 3 hours of sleep. When I woke up I was like:' well, that was unexpected', but 10 minutes, wow.
And you already have very good dream control for a first time, so congratulations

Well I've always had a bit of a gift I guess you could call it. Whenever I am tired im almost like a narcoleptic. I have to sleep and fighting it off is the hardest thing but I have to to get by at work and what not. It's the worst when I've already been sleeping. I've had a few experiences whether paranormal or just brief period where it's like I'm still dreaming when I get up... It's something. Whenever I get in that state I can fall asleep for 5 minutes and something whether it be the dog or the cats, will wake me up and I will explain these long elaborate detailed dreams to my girlfriend and she will be like you know you've only slept for 10 minutes right? So it's not uncommon for something like this to happen to me.

Welcome to the forums, Elemento. Interesting experience you had there. I haven't had a lucid nightmare, per-say, though I have had a nightmare turn lucid and get worse as a result.

One thing that pretty much everyone learns at some point about lucid dreams is that is is not much different from the matrix. Dreams are built largely from expectation. Sure you get strange stuff thrown at you, like the dogs attacking, but to control it you must actually believe that whatever you try will work.

In your dream you were acting in panic, or as you said, you didn't have time to think. These two things are your enemies for controlling your dreams. Firstly, you have until your dream ends to figure something out. The calmer you remain, *generally* the longer the dream will last. If you had to sit under a pile of dogs gnawing at your legs or something while you thought, so be it. As it is not real, there shouldn't be any problem with it, you can't get hurt from it. Perhaps if you would have yelled at the dogs to "knock it off!" while expecting them to react, they likely would have stopped completely. This is just an example of course.

I guess my advice would be:
      1. Always try to stay calm, no matter what.
      2. Remember it is ALL FAKE! Nothing is real! This helps with #1.
      3. Whatever you BELIEVE will happen will generally happen. Both for good or bad.

Good luck with your future of Lucid Dreaming!
