      Excessive Sleeping

Being new I'd like to say a couple of things and ask a couple of questions.

I have recently gotten into the habit of sleeping for 8 hours waking up, and having multiple subsequent "naps" afterwards. Like I would wake up after 8 hours for less than one minute and go back to sleep. after I wake up, I'm not tired, but I sort of force myself back to sleep. Anyways... a lot of times in my dreams, I realize that things are out of place such as distorted text and such, but I don't think anything of it in my dreams. before I knew of the concept of lucid dreams, I had a couple of them every now and then.

      My questions are:
      1) Sometimes when i'm half asleep, i try to wake up (like i'm teetering on the edge of consciousness and unconsciousness, but I can't wake myself up... but if I try hard enough, I jolt awake. Is that sleep paralysis?

      2) Sometimes right before I fall asleep, my whole body jolts for apparently no reason at all. It doesn't happen too frequently but it has happened more than once. I am laying down with my eyes closed, but not asleep when this happens. Does anyone know what that is, or the cause of it?

      3) I also think that since i've recently been sleeping an average of 12-15 hours a day, it's nearly impossible to recall anything that I've dreamed about. Any way to change that?

      Last question
      4) In relation to the sleeping for 8 hours and then taking 2-3 hour long naps immediately after (by forcing myself asleep even though I'm not tired). Does my ability to fall back asleep right after waking up even though I'm not tired have any benefits?

BTW I apologize for any erratic mistakes to spelling or grammar. It's 3 am and I suffer from insomnia due to Bi-Polar. Note also that my sleeping schedule is usually 5am to 3pm while the normal is something like 8pm to 5am. I'm almost nocturnal :p

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. I think I might have found a new and fun forum to be in and everyone here sounds like they make the community enjoyable. I have yet to see any bullying or such. :p

If you believe you have insomnia, you should probably be speaking to your physician.

That's a lot of sleep for someone who has insomnia. Is something disturbing your sleep at night? Do you have lights on, are there loud noises, or do you drink lots of caffeine?

It's not unusual for some people during puberty to have their "sleep clock" somewhat off-schedule. I don't know how old you are...

      Hello Welcome to Dream Views!

      1. Yep, sounds like sleep paralysis to me. This phase can usually be accompanied by hallucinations, whether audio, visual, tactile, or anything. Don't be scared of it though, everything you perceive while you are in this state is a figment of your imagination, and with some practice, you can turn them into pleasant ones.

      2. I think those are hypnic jerks. I get them a lot too, before I fall asleep. My legs would suddenly jerk or some other body part. I think this is pretty normal, nothing to be worried about.

A hypnic jerk is a twitch which occurs during hypnagogia, just as a person is beginning to fall asleep, often causing them to awaken suddenly for a moment. Physically, hypnic jerks resemble the "jump" experienced by a person when startled, often accompanied by a falling sensation. A higher occurrence in people with irregular sleep schedules is reported.
      3. Are you keeping a dream journal? Normally, we all wake up after every dream cycle, so regardless of the amount of sleep you get, you should wake up multiple times throughout (usually the times we roll over or change position). This requires practice, but you can train yourself to identify those brief waking moments, so instead of just rolling over to sleep again, you can write down keywords about your dreams on your journal quickly, before going back to bed.

      4. It could have some benefits. The one I could really think of is using it to attain lucidity via DEILD. Link: DEILD Tutorial - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views

Hope this helps. See ya around! Good luck.

Maybe it's a dream and if I scream, it will burst at the seams.
