Hello DV! New to lucid dreaming

I have been using these forums for some time and decided I would finally join. I just started getting into lucid dreaming about a month ago and two weeks ago started a dream journal. I can see my progress getting better and I have had more vivid dreams and the start of lucidity. I have yet to have a full on lucid dream and am definitely looking forward to it.

My biggest problem is I can never sleep. I used to just watch Netflix till I passed out and could survive the day with 4 hours of sleep but now that I want to dream I'm noticing it more. It really just depends on luck if I will sleep good or not. I can listen to binaural beats and relaxation sounds in bed and not move a single muscle for an hour and not go into sleep paralysis or fall asleep. I just finished trying to sleep and listing to a 1 hour lucid dream induction and feel very rested but wide awake. Anyways that's my story looking forward to learning a lot more with these forums

Maybe give the beats a rest for a few nights so you have a normal to compare it to, you never know it might be the beats keeping you awake. Also are you trying this on your back? A lot of people struggle to fall asleep on their back for some weird reason. Sleep paralysis is not needed for lucid dreams, it's only partially required for the WILD technique which I'm sure you know about if you've been hanging round here a while

I would say certainly stop the Netflix so late and get around 8-10 hours sleep, I find this works very effectively for the average lucid dreamer

As well, Welcome to Dream Views, glad to hear you join after so long

Welcome to DV! I used to always watch Netflix before going to sleep also. What I usually do now is I may watch a single episode of something, then shut it off and play some soft relaxing music. For some reason I really like going to sleep to psy trance and I feel it enhances my dreams, but of course, that is just my experience. As long as you keep at it you will most definitely become lucid soon. The toughest part is of course getting that first lucid dream, and getting used to dreaming in general. I hope you get a lucid dream soon! Good luck and enjoy your stay!

      Welcome Darkswerk!

Regarding your sleep problem, there's a few things to take into account if you're trying to solve it:

      - No tv/computer 1hour before bed. If possible, keep the lights as dim as possible. Try going for a shower/reading/calm music/meditation, they are good options to do in order to speed melatonin production.
      - Keep a regular sleep schedule: go to bed and get up at same time every day, even if that means you get less sleep than intended. Consistent sleeping makes wonders.
      - Don't stay in bed if you can't fall asleep, that will mostly stress you out. Try getting up, stretching, doing something calm and when you're sleepy you can return to bed.
      - And don't listen to lucid dreaming music when you're in bed. I know many people think this is good, but what you really want to do is create a powerful association between bed and sleep. Only use your bed for sleep.

      Hope these help

Thanks everyone for all the tips about sleeping better. I stopped using the lucid dream induction videos as mentioned and I found that it helped a lot more without so I will keep my bed to just sleep from now on(:

      Heyyo!

I have heard a lot of people on here say not to do a lot of things I do. I drink pop and watch TV right before bed almost every night (I sound like a college kid) and have no trouble sleeping. BUT! Everyone is different. You need to find the things that effect you. Try turning everything that might be keeping you up at night off and then bringing in one at a time to find the culprit. That way going off all this stuff isn't permanent, but temporary for most.
