I've also read some of "Exploring the world of Lucid Dreaming" but couldnt stick through it the first time around, I feel motivated now though. It seems like consistent good sleep is necessary for LD, and I have the most awful sleep schedule right now so I guess thats where I'll start.

Yeah, Auron has it right. DILD is like the staple of every lucid dreamer. Not sure if you are a baseball fan, but DILD is comparable to a pitcher's fastball. Everyone throws a fastball. WILD is comparable to a specialty pitch. WILDing becomes easier the more you experience lucid dreaming in general. So, even if you want to start with WILD practice, make sure you brush up on DILD as well.

While a solid sleep schedule can only help, a trained dreamer can deal with a bad schedule. I wouldn't call it necessary. It really depends on what your body is used to. If its used an erratic schedule, then it shouldn't be much of a problem. If you usually have a normal schedule, but just happen to be erratic recently, then you are going to want to get back to the schedule your body is most comfortable with.

It's possible even with an erratic sleep schedule, I'm a truck driver and my cycle constantly shifts to make up for on time delivery and hours of service regulations. Whether or not it's hindering me I couldn't tell you, but like King Yoshi said, depends on the person, I'm rather use to it. Give that book another shot as well, it's a little dry at first but he breaks it down pretty good.
