You can try to do your meditation technique with WBTB and see if anything magical happens
Trying WILD and related stuff at nighttime might give some awesome experience yet it is rare to achieve lucid dreams from that.
So i'd suggest you:
1. Get Up For X Time
2. Get Back To Bed
3. Relax Body
4. Do Your Meditation Way

And about the second post
During WILDs something called conscious zoneout might happen
Your example for using counting to keep your mind conscious and you suddenly find out that you stopped counting
It's kinda like forgetting about something and then remembering it back
