      Hello, can anyone help?

Hello, I have had a recurring dream since I was little and I was wondering if anyone might be able to shed any light on it. Sorry if it's rather long-winded...

I was eight when I first had this dream. I am now 24 and I can’t count the number of times I have dreamt it. The sequence remains largely the same, although of late it is becoming more stressful and I wake up exhausted. I have no recollection of ever having been to this place in real life or of having seen the faces I see. I am aware that I am dreaming but so far I have never been able to change or control it.
Recently, I have started to wonder if it is a dream at all.

      In short:
I am hoping to meet people with recurring dreams and ask what I can do about it?
Is this a lucid dream if I can’t control it?
Are there other experiences like this which are not dreams?
Does a recurring dream mean something?
What is this place I have never been to and why have I dreamt about it so much?
How can I stop it/control it?

      The dream
I wake up. I turn on the light but it doesn’t work. I wait until I can see in the dark. My digital radio has morphed into an old carriage clock; but the hands look like they have been rubbed out of focus so I can’t tell the time.

I have a strong feeling of needing to find something but I have no idea what I’m looking for.

I get up. I have only the bed sheets for clothes. I crawl through an old fireplace out into the street. It is night, the lights hang low and dim concealing a place full of dead trees and poorly lit doorways. There is a smell of alcohol and pipe smoke, and the air feels really really heavy. (This is the only dream that I’m aware of smells – is anyone else aware of being able to smell in their dreams?) Underfoot are cobbled stones which are wet. I find it difficult to walk without slipping. A discordant piano jangles the air in spits and spurts.

People linger behind the tree stumps and in the doorways. They are dressed in old-fashioned clothes – the women burst out of corsets and the men sport hats and waistcoats. I am in France (although nowhere I’ve been before), sometime in the past and people speak only in French. (NB I don’t speak French. I am not sure if what I’m hearing is my own bowdlerised impression of what I know French to sound like or if I am in fact listening to the actual language. Is that possible? It sounds pretty real to me. And sometimes I seem to be able to understand what people are saying…)

No-one notices me - even though I’m draped in bed sheets and constantly falling over – except one girl. I’m not sure what she looks like though. I can’t tell if she is good or bad. She gets in the way. She goes and comes back a lot, like a bird to its nest.

I approach doors, banging at each one until my fists bleed (although my hands heal in between, as if I’ve been re-set for the next door). No-one ever answers. The girl keeps orbiting. I find a lit window where I see a man working at a desk, too busy to notice me. I knock at the glass. He looks over but can’t see me. He picks up a pair of binoculars and points them right at me, but he still doesn’t see me. He blows out the candle which extinguishes all the light in the street. I can’t see anything. She is still there though, because she holds my hand and squeezes it so hard that I wake up.

Hey there Sonia and to the forum

I'll answer your short questions first and then try an give you a bit of insight on your reoccuring dream. Sorry if this reply goes on for a bit lol.

      1. I am hoping to meet people with recurring dreams and ask what I can do about it?

Well in answer to your first question i must inform you that there are plenty of people on here who have had reoccuring dreams in their lives and there are also many that have overcome reoccuring dreams and i am sure they can offer some good advice on how to overcome your reoccuring dreams, but that doesn't mean that only they can help you, you will find that the whole community will help out, so if you have any questions about it please do ask.

      2. Is this a lucid dream if I can’t control it?

A lucid dream is a dream in which you are aware that you are dreaming whilst still in the dream state. You can still lucid dream and not have much control or no control, but in most lucid dreams you will have some control.

      3. Are there other experiences like this which are not dreams?

What you are experiencing is a dream, its just a reocurring one, if you are aware that you are having the dream whilst in the dream state and you know that you are in your bed dreaming then you are having a lucid dream but it is more like an uncontrollable dream, but thats only if you are aware if its a dream, and on the plus side you can work with this dream and achieve control to help you stop the reocurring dreams.

      4. Does a recurring dream mean something?

Reoccuring dreams do not necessarily mean something important, think about it more as something that is on your mind alot, or your mind might be trying to tell you something. At the bottom of this reply i'll do an interpretation of the dream and i'll try to see if i can tell what the dream tells you about yourself. Reoccuring dreams usually mean that something is on your mind and you need to come to a realisation of what is on your mind to sort out the problem.

      5. What is this place I have never been to and why have I dreamt about it so much?

Dreamscapes can be random, the places represented in the dream to you don't necessarily have to link to anything, the dream world can be very random at times, but my guess is that something is on your mind whether it is consciously or subconsiously. I think you experience this dream so much simply because your mind is trying to get a message across to you within the dream and because you are not recognising it it is pretty much looping until it does get the message across to you.

      6. How can I stop it/control it?

In my eyes i believe you have two options, i'll review these options for you as well as trying to give you some advice.

Option 1. You could use these reoccuring dreams to your advantage by making it clear in your mind that the next time you experience this dream you will dreaming, this can help trigger lucidity and this will allow you to take control of the dream, however just because your lucid it doesn't necessarily mean you will have perfect control at first, you may need to have a few tries to improve you control, however i could be wrong, you could be very good, but basically what you could do is command the room to be lit up and the whole town, you could kick down the doors, smash open that window and let the guy inside know that you are there, you could also discipline that girl that your not sure about. Lucid dreaming can be so helpful, since this dream reoccurs alot for you it is excellent because you can use it to become lucid. Basically just tell yourself that the next time you are in the dream you need to recognise that it is a dream.

Option 2. You could explain the dream in more detail to various people so that they can interpret it and give you better understandings of it, that way you can identify if your mind is trying to tell you anything and what it is telling you also so that you can receive the message the dream is trying to get to you. After receiving it would be pointless for the dream to reoccur.

      Interpretation

Right, judging by the dream you described i think that you sometimes maybe find yourself lost at times, whether it be at work or just during your everyday life, not actually lost physically but more mentally, you may not know whats going on, it may take you a while to grasp things, this is shown when you eventually manage to see in the dark, however when you do grasp things you sometimes still find it difficult.

I think that you maybe are unsure about certain peopl and you want to be sure of them because you don't know what to expect of them, this is shown by the girl you saw, unsure about her. In terms of the guy behind the glass not noticing you i would say that maybe you try to get across to people in life but people will ignore you or not listen to you whenever you try to get your point of view across or what not.

I think that when you do try to get something you want you may push too far and stumble along the way, make a mistake, this is what i think the girl grabbing you represented and this is when you woke up. You need to be aware that this interpretation could be wrong of what i said however if you want to send me a PM in which you give me a more detailed description of the dream i may be able to give a more accurate interpretation, i'm talking about emotions and whether or not you feel scared etc.

Anyways i hope that helped and please do feel free to ask any questions you may have

Welcome to dreamviews. That is extraordinarily interesting. The good news for you is that a reoccurring dreams means picking out dreamsigns and cues for becoming lucid is very easy and narrow. Whenever you do a critical state test, have that dream strongly in mind.

I'll try my best with these..

I am hoping to meet people with recurring dreams and ask what I can do about it? I have two or three of the same dream over the course of a couple years. Unfortunately I am not the expert to ask on this. But I guarantee you will find someone here who can help you.

Is this a lucid dream if I can’t control it? No. If you were to become lucid (aware, conscious, able to control) than you may be able to fly right out of your reoccurring dream into a dream of your own making.

Are there other experiences like this which are not dreams? Unless you believe in OBE and astral projection, I guess not.

Does a recurring dream mean something? Many will tell you to go get that dream deciphered (there is an interpretation forum) because it has some significance to yourself and your subconscious.

What is this place I have never been to and why have I dreamt about it so much? France, most likely a part of an urban city you created in your subconscious. (I am not convinced it is the exact language if you, yourself, do not know it)

How can I stop it/control it? Learn lucidity most likely. As I said above if you can learn the craft and become fully aware of your dream state, you can "escape" the dream.

As a final word-- yes I can smell in dreams, but not always.

edit: These guys are right. I guess I never consider it lucid unless I can control my dreams, personally.

Your body takes care of that in the proper time. Remember that you almost always awaken after a REM (dream) period. No real worries.

It's funny though, I remember some lucids where I tried everything I could (for fun) to wake up. It didn't come until I least expected it.

As others have said, use the fact that it's a recurring dream as a cue that you are dreaming. I too can smell in my dreams, but I cannot smell in the real world.

I'd suggest you try and gain control of your dream, then ask the little girl about the dream. I have had recurring dreams in the past, and it seems to me the best way to deal with them is to confront them. As the little girl seems to be the only one that isn't hiding from you, try talking to her. Something else you could try is instead of banging on the doors, walk through it. Don't open it, just walk through it as if it wasn't there.

Good luck in getting to the bottom of this one! And if you ever do attain lucidity in other dreams, sniff the air! You might be able to smell.

Hi and welcome to the forum

Yes you can be lucid with out control, just be sure to notice that lucid dreaming is knowing one is dreaming and not having control although the 2 often go together.

Reoccuring dreams are basically repetative dreams and not necessarily important. They could just mean you are worried over a certain event ect.
