Start with reality checks and dream signs. Think through your nightmare, besides what scares you, what else is in it? If there are objects in it that you see in real life, start doing reality checks whenever you see that object. This will help you get lucid during your nightmare. Once lucid, you just have to remember that nothing in a dream can hurt you so the nightmare will end.

Thx I'll try it. I just never had much control over my dreams so this'll probably take a weaks worth of tries. Some of the nightmares though, have parts and pieces of past memories making them even more real and frightening, because a lot of the time I'm just living a memeory in my nightmares. And then I get so caught up in it and the fear is just overwhelming. I've tried to supress the memories but, well they're unstoppable. I've had friends tell me that trying to hold the memories down only makes it worse, so I'm just kinda at a loss. In the meantime I'll try to research about nightmares and try the reality checks like you suggested. Thank you very much...

BTW, I see there's a tutorial in the tutorials section on nightmares
I think it could do with a lot of improvement, but it's worth looking at

Reacurring nightmares are awesome for aspiring lucid dreamers!

Thats how i got my first few. I read up on what lucid dreaming was about, and learnt how to do it. Then when a nightmare came up, i knew instantly it was a dream. I had some great experiences because of it.

However now that i understand much more about sleep and dreaming, i no longer have nightmares, so i have to find other ways to become lucid - Lol :p

If your nightmare is recurring, it will be easier to have a lucid dream during one. While in the lucid dream, you can try to resolve the conflict, or you can run away. I recommend the first, because it will lessen the fear next time you have the nightmare (eventually, you'll stop fearing them. And eventually, they will go away on their own).

Thank you sooooooo much guys!!!due to your prowess and knowledge... I had a breakthrough last night. I didn't gain full control of my nightmare, but I did manage to shatter the dream by realizing it was one. Right then and there, I woke up instead of becoming lucid, in even the tiniest bit. But I guess I gotta start somewhere. You guys were a lot of help, especially you, Placebo and Ninja! Now I have only to try attaining lucidity and quell my sporadic sleep walking. Thnx again everyone!!!

Nightmares used to be one of my best two dreamsigns I've faced and overcome many of them.

I used to have recurring falling elevator dreams, then I learned to recognize falling elevators as dreamsigns, and would get Lucid every time it happened.

But to my complete annoyance those dreams stopped happening shortly after I gained control of them. Those were some fun Lucids.

The thing about nightmares is that they are fueled by fear. Once you stop being afraid, the dream stops being scary lol. And will often completely change as a result.

This was my favorite falling elevator Lucid, and also one of my last.

      Lucid in a falling elevator

I step into the elevator, and the doors slide closed. There is another guy in the elevator with me. I am not sure if I pushed any buttons, but the elevator starts going down. I start to hear some strange sounds, then the elevator starts jerking around violently, then begins falling fast. Instantly I realize I am dreaming. I calmly sit down, with my back against the back wall, and my legs crossed. The other guy with me, is starting to freak out really bad. I say to him," relax this is a dream. We wont hit the ground, because there is no ground" then I tell him that he should reach out with his thoughts, and he will be able to feel that it's a dream. Then he says to me," you know I think your right." I say, "I know I am right!" Then, I am sitting there for awhile just enjoying the falling. And I am making sure that we don't hit any ground, in a way that I don't know how to describe. then something odd happens. The walls of the elevator become transparent, like glass. And without noticing any change in motion, we are no longer falling, but flying across an amazing landscape, in a glass box. And I am controlling our flight. After flying for a while I set us down. we get out, and I am about to go find some other adventure when I wake up.
