Seconded. It's usual to feel pain in your dreams, which is why pinching yourself in dreams wouldn't be an effective RC either. That fact is why I laugh at the phase "Pinch me, I must be dreaming".

I use it and it has worked for me, but as the others said it is definitely more prone to fail as a RC.

It's not reliable. There's a random chance you will feel pain in the dream (sometimes it's 20/80, other times its 50/50 or 80/20. Depends on expectation and experience.).

If you want an equally subtle reality check, try bending your finger backwards (if it goes too far, you are dreaming), poking your finger through your other hand (if it goes through, you are dreaming), or investing in a digital watch (there are many ways to do a reality check using a watch!).

The three RC's I always use that never fail me and use something you always have on you are the following.

Pinch your nose shut, close you mouth and try to breath through your nose. I always am able to breath through my nose while in a dream.

Try poking your fingers through your palms. In my dreams my fingers will go through my palms.

Lastly just look at your hands. I always look at my right hand, and count my fingers. Some times my hand looks perfectly fine but I have 6-7 fingers. Other times I have 5 fingers yet my hands are all distorted.

All three of these are good reliable reality checks, and all three of them have you use body parts which are always on you. I use to do the watch check but a problem became that I never wear watches, so sometimes I would forget to wear it in waking and then in a dream I would go to check my watch and not have one on, and I also never wear watches to bed. The book check is a good one, just like the watch is. But like the watch, again problem becomes that you never always have a book on or around you. Sometimes I have found myself in the middle of the woods. So I would work on doing reality checks with parts of your body so that way no matter where your dream takes place, you can always preform them.
