      a Question

How long should I wait (after starting a dream diary / learning to recall dreams)
      before attempting to lucid dream?
      -------
I tried to FILD after 6 hrs sleep
but I fell back asleep before I started to move my fingers -_-' any suggestions?

The tutorial said to wait to move them until I was "just about to fall asleep"
      (like after hypnagogic imagery... Right?)

Should I start with something else or just keep trying this?

How long have you been keeping a dream journal thusfar? I dream journaled for a week or so before trying any techniques. The purpose of dream recall is to recall the lucid dream in perfect detail, once you have one. By recording your dreams, you can identify common themes after a while (dream signs).

I highly suggest moving towards DILD, especially as a beginner.

You can really jump right into it, although building up your recall is pretty important. If you're just starting out, I think it's better to work on DILDs versus WILDs, just because a lot of people struggle with them from the beginning and they can seem daunting and demoralizing if you're losing sleep directly trying those techniques and maybe not getting results. As far as the DJ goes, as soon as you start recognizing recurring things you've found your dreamsigns, and you should ALWAYS be reality checking

I don't think there's a specific "right" time for starting to try to lucid dream. You want to be able to consistently remember your dreams, or you'll just forget them even if you do become lucid. If you can remember one or two dreams per night you should be fine, but more is always better.

Unless you're only going for WILDs (or WILD variations), you should probably also start getting into the habit of RCing. I think DILD is easier for beginners than other techniques (it's the only way I've been able to have any LDs).

You might as well try a variety of methods, but you don't have to give up on FILD either. For not falling asleep, try using a WBTB. Or move your fingers sooner.

Thanks everybody i haven't found any recurring themes yet, but i've only journaled for 12 nights, with some gaps in between days.
i usually remember like 1 to 3 dreams a night--but i have to put a conscious effort into it...

      i don't seem to have any signs;
my dreams take place outside and inside,
they involve places i have been to and places i haven't,
thy are usually fairly normal--no giant animals, nothing out of the usual.

      any tips for finding dreamsigns?
should my dreams be very vivid before i start to try to DILD?

Maybe the dream sign isn't in the location. Maybe it's the situation (you are late for class, you get into an argument, etc.). It could be a reoccurring emotion. Do you ever feel anxious in your dreams? Pay attention to the people in your dreams, and how they behave. Do your dreams ever have familiar people in mismatched situations? (Seeing your parents at school, seeing an old friend from another town, your brother acting oddly)

Look harder. Be more clever than your dreams.

oh, i see, thanks for your help i'm checking through my 21 recorded dreams,

7 of the dreams were related to school, including my old school, and the one i'm at now.
the dream topics ranged from people i used to know, to me losing my backpack.

can that broad of a situation be considered a Dreamsign?
if so, what should i do? a reality check every time i'm going to be late to school, or lose something involving school?

as for dreamcharacter behavior, it tends to vary. sometimes the characters are indifferent, sometimes grateful, and quite often their personality and/or appearance is modelled on someone in real life, or in a book, or from a tv show.

i don't see an easly distinguishable set a behavioral patterns, is it possible that there isn't one, or am i not looking hard enough?

It can be as broad as school, I think that could actually improve your chances of becoming lucid. As long as you remember do a reality check whenever something school related is happening(pretty much every time you go to school).
Even if your first reality check doesn't prove you're dreaming, you should continue to think about dreaming the rest of the schoolday, just in case. Sometimes rc's become very routine, and won't work in a dream because you're so used to them failing in real life.

thanks! and sorry, one more question:
in all the dreams i remember, i was never actually AT school, they just involved classmates, homework, me being late, etc.

so should i still do RCs at school, or only when i do something off-campus and school-related?

Interesting. I'd do reality checks at school anyway, and especially when doing off-campus and school related.

I got my first LD a week in, I kept a dream journal right away. After waking up from 6ish hours of sleep I decided to focus on all the dream signs I have and think why the hell did I not notice a dream then? I first tryed to remember as many dreams as back as I could then just looked over my journals to notice dream signs. After about 10ish minutes of thinking about dreamsigns and to do a RC after notcing and streching I went back to bed. First dream I had was LD

For me a big dreamsign is working at my restaurant or being at one of my old houses, but when I was in my dream I noticed something completly out of the ordinary, the president was at my house and I was like this must be a dream. If you go about your day thinking of dream signs and actually questioning reality, your eventually going to do the same in your dreams.

I guess what I'm saying is dream signs really helped me get my first LD, so just keep journaling and try to remember as many dreams back as you can. The time I LD'd i remembered 3 or 4 dreams back and I went over where I should have noticed it was a dream.

Good luck, and also I'm just a noob who's putting his 2 cents in
