When I was little I got away from many nightmares through lucid dreaming too, I don't know how, but I would just "realize" it had to be a nightmare.
Even though I was very young I remember all 4 times I tried to do this.
The first time, I was swimming at a pool, and a polar bear (yes, a polar bear) came and started killing and eating my friends and family, I thought, this is a dream, and decided that the best way to wake up was being eaten by the polar bear, so I went up to it (voluntary) and I could almost feel his claws deep in my skull, but eventually I woke up.
The second time I was at my house, and it would be infested with zombies (more like the ones in Zelda, the ones that jump on you and hold on to you while they scream) and I went up to them and begged them to eat me because then I would wake up, and I also said, I know its a dream, so it wont hurt. Right before the zombie started eating me it said "trust me, even though its a dream, I will make it hurt" it was so scary I woke up crying.
Anyways, the other 2 that happened are very similar, in one the "bad guy" was a vampire that refused to kill me cause he didnt want me to wake me up, he want me to suffer in my lucid nightmare, and the other one was even scarier, cause I wanted to wake up by screaming, but when I tried to scream (i was hidding so the monsters wouldnt get me) not a single sound came from my mouth, and well i couldnt wake up.
