Extremely Creepy Sounds When Attempting to WILD

I've been browsing this forum and attempting my own lucid dreams since late April, but had a big break due to stress fractures in my shins and the grueling pain resulting in waking up in the middle of the night. But now, I'm back at it again.

Last night, I was falling asleep naturally, attempting to stay awake using the finger method, and about 20 minutes in -- pretty sure I was near lucidity -- I hear a noise that sounds like 3 thuds in ascending or descending heights in my closet, which is straight past my feet. The sound was similar to something from paranormal activity, and may actually be a memory from creating a video 'normal activity.' Either way, the sound scared the nuts out of me and I jolted up and it appeared as if my cat (at my feet) was staring at the sound--startled, too, maybe.

I'm wondering if this is simply a recurring memory or something that almost seems to prevent me from going lucid. When I think about the sound, it gives me severe chills and freaks me out, and I'm pretty sure I've heard it before when attempting to WILD. I wrote it down last night, though.

Nothing was out of my place in my closet or anything, and so I'm just wondering if it could be almost like a false awakening. Strange, but I looked at my clock and it was 11:02, then 11:03, then 11:04 consecutively. But I was awake clearly because my light worked. Anyways, any ideas as to what this could be? It freaks me out and highly discourages me from trying to lucid again..

It sounds like you were experiencing hypnagogic sounds, which happen during the onset of sleep paralysis. This is a very natural part of WILDing, a lucid dreaming technique. Sleep paralysis happens when you're still for a long period of time, or at least very relaxed and eager to sleep.

If you want to WILD, you have to become used to these sounds along with other sensations. Next time it happens, try not to jump or move, and stay with them as long as you can. There's nothing that will harm you during this. Even if it feels like something is walking on top of you (there have been tactile sensations reported during sleep paralysis as well as auditory and visual), it's not real, just a hallucination.

If you're successful at relaxing and staying still during sleep paralysis, with eyes closed, you can enter a dream in which you're almost fully lucid.

We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

from the sound of it, it appears you are a big pussy. I would suggest growing some balls before attempting again

hi shirtsleeve, listening to the best of the pixies at the moment, and theyre totally mad sorry, one thing i sort of picked up on was that you may be worried about having more lucid dreams and your letting noises and things stop you having to be scared by what may happen when it works, hope this isnt to patronizing , just relax
