Using dip (as opposed to smoking)

So. I made a smoking thread a while back... and a couple months ago I decided to quit. So I moved from kingsized regulars, to standard lights. Then just a few days ago I though it'd be better for me to try and ween myself off of smoking and onto dip... and then quit dip. What do you guys think? I've been using dip 2 days now, and it does give me a fix... but there are a few downsides to smoking. First of all, it's pretty dirty... and I've heard stories of people getting cancer from just a few years (only 4 years in one case) from using it.

I've done a bit of research and the studies show various results. Some say it is very safe, especially compared to smoking... while others say it's as bad as smoking or worse. You'd think that in the short term (a few months, maybe a year) that dip would be a good alternative to smoking... and to help quit. But I don't really know, and that's why I'm making this thread.

So what do you folks think? And I don't need people judging and being condescending... I know it's bad, and I'm looking for help.

      Thanks.

I've never used dip because it just seems to dirty and gross. But I have used Snus and I was surprised to find I actually like it. There's no need to spit, the buzz lasts about 20 minutes, you can use it anywhere (it's easier to conceal), it costs about $1.40 for a 6 pack (I think).
Lately, though, I've been using an e-cigarette called "N Joy". I use menthol and it was surprisingly amazing. It tastes a lot like peppermint but it's not overpowering. I recommend the e-cig to every smoker I meet who wants to quit.
I live in BFE and the seller doesn't keep the full flavor stocked, so I'm still smoking as much as I was. But I asked him to start ordering more because I'll go through at least a "carton" (5 cartridges). And when I smoke the e-cig regularly, I only go through half a pack of smokes a day instead of 2 packs.

A lot of my friends were able to quit by substituting cigarettes with marijuana. They said the pot helped them relax and get through the first couple of days where the body starts to panic and reduces their anxiety and depression. Dip is not better for you than smoking, it's just not worse. Dip causes cancer of the mouth at an extremely accelerated rate compared to smoking, both deliver nicotine, which is more addictive than heroine (physiologically speaking, it's actually the most addictive substance in existence.) You should try and find a way to get off of the nicotine, and you will probably need something to help you through the first two weeks.

I would never condone trading one addiction for another (which dip will most likely become). You are better off trying to just quit, altogether. Reward yourself for each day without smoking a cigarette. Penalize yourself for every cigarette you smoke. Educate yourself on exactly how bad cigarettes, dip and nicotine in general are for you. Would you drink paint thinner for a buzz? I would hope not. Once you begin to think about cigarettes in that same vein, you will realize how much you don't want to smoke.

And I'm not judging you, so I hope it doesn't sound like it. I know how hard it is to quit smoking. I haven't had one since New Year's Eve. My willpower has never been any more remarkable than anyone else's, and if I can stop smoking after 14 years, I believe anybody can. You just have to want it bad enough.

Heard today it's something like 4x as addictive to smoking.

Anyway, if you must use/be addicted to something, just chew nicotine gum. It's got a huge punch of nicotine, lasts longer, is 100x safer, can be used during school/work. I'm not talking about using it to help quit anything. I'm talking about making that the drug of choice. People don't seem to try that as an option often enough and it frankly baffles me. Seems a logical choice.

It's still associated with dangers... but you're omitting literally hundreds are chemicals that is detrimental to your health and it still gives a powerful buzz... so long as you pick the right kind. Some will just make you sleepy/sick/tired. The target brand is nice...170 for $30.

I actually know a few people that have used Snus to quit smoking...it does seem to work pretty well. Good luck quitting OP, very good decision!

I've been dipping for 3 years now and while im in the process of quiting, it still isnt easy, thought i go cold turkey HA! didnt happen. the withdraws arnt as bad as smoking in my case but still its not a great alternative to smoking. weed sounds like a good idea but honestly even after the withdrawals are gone, the urge is still there, shitty time quiting.

I don't think weening ones self off smoking translates to trying out different styles of getting the fix. You are suppose to slowly reduce the amount of what you already use overtime.

My friend's mom quit smoking abruptly one day. Ofc she had been trying for awhile. She simply just stopped and to help her quit she opened a pack of cigs that was completely full and awarded herself for every day she didn't smoke one.

I have seen people have good results with electronic cigarettes, I recommend it.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

Thanks for the replies! Nicotine gum is too expensive, and so are E-cigarettes. Though they're good options. I think Snus is the best option, since it's cheap (untaxed) and much much better for you than even dip. The problem is, I don't have a credit card. My buddy used to use Snus and said he'd get 10 tins for $50... which is a great deal. So if I can find a dealer that'll accept either paypal or online banking then I'm set.

By the way, dip has been working quite well. I've gone from a pack a day (give or take) to 1-3 cigarettes a day. And that's only with dipping once or twice in the day. So it is helping.

By the way... right now, I'm just trying to quit smoking, not nicotine. Me and my friend want to do a 7 day hike and smoking absolutely rapes my lungs, and in turn my performance. Also, 7 days worth of cigarettes would be a lot to carry, and I'd have to carry out 7 days worth of butts. Also, it's $150 fee to get on the trail... and I figure that by not buying 15 packs of smokes, that pays for my trail fee! So yeah, there it is.

In case anyone is wondering, I started on Copenhagen Long Cut... which is still about half full after a week. But, I also decided to try Skoal Bandits Wintergreen... and I don't like them. They barely taste like anything, and they're small. I'll stick with Copenhagen Long Cut till I can get some Snus.

I use to, back in college. I always used the pouches cause I can not stand the texture of fine or longcut. I have tried Snus, not terrible, I always
prefer to have snus when on my motorcycle because I cant smoke or spit with a full face helmet on.

However, due to the wear n tear on my gums, I decided to change over to smoking, which I am trying to quit alltogether.
