Buying rounds in a group of 3-5 people is common enough in both high and low class establishments in the states, as is buying this or that fellow a drink in 'townie' bars where nearly everyone's a regular. Drinking in the states with people from Spain, France, Russia and Latin America, they all seemed familiar enough with the custom--I dare say it's instinctual and universal.

The best chocolate stout I've ever had was brewed by a friend who had been one of my poetry teachers. He was trying to replicate a Pete's Black and Tan, and was absolutely blind to the fact that he'd created something so much better, which worked out in my favor because he unloaded a good portion of it on me. He brewed it with a bit of coffee, and the result was this full-bodied mocha latte of a beer, but not overwhelmingly 'novel'--overall just a solid stout.

It's rare the mood for a stout will strike me, but Lefthand's Black Jack Porter is a great darker beer.

Para mí: Dos Equis, Amber. As in the brown bottle not the green. Feels good, man.

      King of jokings.

This is the alcohol a ten year old boy would like. A light-weight ten year old at that.

If you want the taste of aniseed in your spirits then grow up, drink pernod and wash with absinthe already and be done.

      jkjk

But seriously, I need help now. What are stouts? Why are they black?

My favourite beer that I've had is this one which my mate got somewhere, usually I get really sick of beer if
I've had more than 4 in a night. But I was pissed as a newt, and this he had this beer that had little bits of hops I'm assuming, floating around in it still
      Soooo good!

After that is Boag's Draught or Cascade.

I need to drink more beer.

      Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
      Young's Double Chocolate Stout
      Dos Equis Amber

It's like a three way tie depending on my mood.

tommo....yeah...stouts tend to be darker, thicker and more potent beers. They're like a meal in it's own.

Um. Lol. afaik that's the only beer we have which has that bottle lol. If that's the reason it's like that though, that's interesting. But we have heaps of others which aren't like that. It's also a notoriously shit beer lol Maybe that's why the people who drink it get so pissed off. Oh and you guys have inspired me to go find some new beer. What are some ones that aren't really bitter? I was reading a while ago that different Hops varieties have either really bitter flavours or sweet/aromatic kind of flavours. So I'm guessing those stouts would be like that? My post isn't formatting properly, sorry about this wall of text. Fuckin' weird.

depends on the type of stout....some Imperial stouts have higher ABV....they're going to have that bite just because of that. Oatmeal stouts and such are sort of bitter when it comes to the after taste. Just don't go with the generic Guinness...there are a lot more stouts with better flavors out there. If I were you, I'd start with an oatmeal or chocolate stout. Some of them taste like coffee...but in a good way.

How is it beer if it tastes like coffee? lol

I was gonna try some Guinness just to try it anyway. But I guess I'll pick up some others too.

      Don't expect coffee.

      But it's a good entry-level stout alike.

Call it commercialist. Whatever. If it's chilled, it's a nice thick and creamy drink that tastes fine.

Make sure it's chilled. English ales ought to be warm in some cases, but Guiness isn't an English ale.

Guinness doesn't taste like coffee like Sindred mentioned. Some of the chocolate stouts taste like it. But the ones that do, vary...some are really good. It's all about experimentation when finding out whats the best brew for you.

I find it to be my best beer flavour and cost wise... well... all considering. So I disagree.

Also, I saw someone post maudite a few pages back... I do enjoy that as well. It's not too expensive and is tasty. Except for the apple kind... it's not my type.

There are stouts specifically flavoured like coffee, it's that your bag.
