What happens when an unstoppable force, collides with an immovable object?

I'll start by guessing that they will be vaporized!

I came up with that situation (specifically an arrow and a rock) years ago and think about it every so often. An arrow keeps flying straight, it's in its nature to fly straight no matter what gets in its way. Then there is a rock that is completely solid, it cannot be destroyed and nothing can move past it.

The real answer is that such items are impossible. Anything can be broken with enough force, and anything with velocity can be slowed down with enough force.

I know it was a joke question and the answer is obvious, though I'd say it anyway.

The unstoppable force will eventually make its way around the immovable object. It's unstoppable, so it keeps on moving. But that implies 2 or 3 dimensions of force, and I'm guessing we're sticking to 1.

And even then, I barely passed physics, so I don't know if what I'm saying is true.

Of corse they would break (probably explode into energy actually) but thats to easy. I thought part of the paradox was that they were both indestructible.

theres always spaces between atoms. the unsoppable force could be one atom thick, maybe a helium attom, so it passes through the other

Did anyone think that it would just bounce back?
No where did it say it had to keep going(: Just because it's going backwards doesn't mean it has negative force, it just means it's traveling in another direction. Since the rock doesn't move, all the kinetic energy is transferred back into the moving force to cause it to immediately return to where it came from without actually ever stopping.
