      hahahahaha

Yeah I love that flower too. And Dark - I don't think the question is how it got up there, rather how the fuck did it get IN there???? lol
It's huge, it must have crawled in as a tiny thing and grown up in there lol

I'll bet you could grow birds of paradise where you are. You would just need to bring it indoors and put it in a sunny window when it gets cold.

Do you not have Black Widows where you live? I thought they lived everywhere.

      Maybe.

It's the first snail I have ever seen in a spider's web. Something about that really creeps me out.

And that reminds me of another picture I took a while ago. A black widow with a (once) huge caterpillar. I think it was the biggest bw I had ever seen. (see my finger for size comparison.)

      Spoiler for black widow:

Apparently there are, but I don't think I've ever seen one. They must be rare.

I think we have black widows around here, but the most common poisonous spider here is the brown recluse.

The biggest spiders around here - and these are very common - are wolf spiders. Here's one I just happened to notice one day sitting not 2 feet from me:

      Ass end

      face

It took me a long time to work my camera this close - it just sat there, and I took pic after pic, edging gradually closer - and when it suddenly turned around it freaked me out. Then I worked in close again and got the second shot. That envelope is a big mailer for a DVD and the writing is pretty big - the spider's leg spread would probably cover the entire palm of my hand

Somewhere I have a pic of one next to my foot but I can't find it.Here's a pic off the web just for size ref:

There are lots of different species of wolf spiders - the ones around here are actually a bit bigger than this one - in fact I've seen them damn near twice as big (and I think they look a lot cooler - in fact in a way they're beautiful). But gah - this is just what I need - it's a spider and a wolf wrapped up in one! Suddenly I have a bit of insight into my story..

Lol yeah we struck up a bit of a bond - you know, the photographer/model thing. She's long gone now - didn't even leave a note or anything. I miss her so much - at least I still have the pics..

As far as I know, we have no spiders anywhere near that big or dangerous in this country. Thank fuck for that. The worst we have to put up with around here are wasps. The evil little bastards fly right up in your face and chase you when you run away.

I swear to God, they do it for a laugh. It's a goddamn conspiracy!

      Ugh! I HATE wasps!!

I should mention - luckily the wolf spiders aren't poisonous or aggressive - in fact people like having them around because they eat insects (including other spiders). I guess that's why some woman took a pic with one right next to her hand.. (I can't do it, even knowing they won't bite and aren't poisonous - they freak me the hell out!!)

I won't believe for a second that you can't see what's wrong there.

I've never minded bees and wasps. Usually other people are scared and I'm the one to catch them. But from spiders I run.

D: Darkmatters, that would have scared the crap out of me. Every summer those spiders take over the shed and I have to find some way to get in and open the little pen door to let my chickens outside.

It wouldn't be quite as bad if they weren't SO FAST.

Oooo...wolf spiders. Great pictures DM and Anderj!

We don't seem to have the big wolf spiders here. But I lived in Southern Utah for a bit before moving here, and when I first saw one there I thought it was a baby tarantula. They freak me out a little because they are so darn fast. Black Widows are pretty slow--that's why I don't mind getting too close to them--just so long as they don't actually crawl on me. I even touched one on the back once just to see if I could do it. Anderj--yours looks almost cuddly, like a big stuffed animal. But I'll bet if I tried to touch it it would jump and it would freak me out, and it would freak out too...and then we would all be freaked out.

Lol I freaked out when I scrolled innocently past that pic not expecting to see it. Suddenly I almost jumped out of my skin!

Dianeva: "I won't believe for a second that you can't see what's wrong there."

Do you mean because spiders aren't insects? Heh yeah, I could have been more precise there and said "they eat insects AND other spiders."

Jim (Hah! We know now!! There's no hiding anymore!) - your wolf spiders seem to be the same species as mine - they wear those tigerskin coats!! Actually they're awesome looking if they didn't creep me out so much. That's a big one - the legs and body are thick compared to the youngster I got pics of.

That one was about a 3.5" (~9cm) of leg span and the body was about 1" (~2.5cm) long. One of the biggest I've seen in the barn. I like them because they kill those nasty stink bugs we have around here.

Ok, I just checked and 3 1/2" is all the way across the palm of my hand - that's about the size of the biggest ones I've seen too. Though if you'd grab the tips of their legs and stretch them out they'd probably go to 4 or 4 1/2". *SHUDDER*

Great - and now I'm going to bed..

      Nite.

Spidrs are terrible. I've battled them often. They walk around until you squish them with a picece of paper attached to a chemistry textbook from 3 foot above. Then maggots come and gather the remnants.

I'ma just interject into this lovely conversation about spiders and deep-rooted fears to say that many of the photos posted on the last few pages have made me smile. Good on you all for sharing your lives with the rest of us. I am to receive a camera in the mail tomorrow and hope to join in posting worthwhile photos of my everyday. We'll see how it goes!
