      Android Phones

I'm getting my first smartphone either today or tomorrow (never really needed one until now), and I'm probably going to go with the LG Optimus 2X. It's not the best phone out there, but from the reviews I've read, it's definitely a good one (plus it's cheap on the Wind Tab).

I plan on getting it rooted, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it my self. Does anyone here own a rooted Android device or know of any good guides?

Sorry this post wasn't helpful towards your rooting question, but it's the thought that counts.

I seem to recall reading a thread about that...was it here? It was back in January, I think.

You can find this info online, but I'm pretty sure someone on this forum had offered to help people with that.

melanieb, There was a thread loosely related to this in Tech Talk.
Personally, however, I swear by Universal Androot. Why make it complicated?

I've never had a smartphone in my life too.

But if I had a choice, I would probably choose iPhone over Android because I think it's smoother and more user-friendly. Till then I'll stick with my dumbphone because I've had enough of internet at home.

I have a rooted Galaxy S with custom ROM and kernel. I often flash new stuff so if you need any help let me know. You'll be surprised by the endless possibilities you have if you decide to root your phone, and even when it's not rooted it has a lot more possibilities than iOS. Just remember to read about rooting before you do it, and be absolutely certain you know what you're doing. Rooting is not for everybody.

I want to buy a cheap android and hack it. Just to learn my way around the system. But if you don't really know what you are doing than stay away from it.

If you really want to wrap your head around the options, start looking around your phone's boards over on XDA Developers. Personally, if I had any money right now I'd probably grab an iPhone, even though I enjoy tinkering with Android and already have apps in the Android ecosystem. I've rooted and/or flashed custom ROMs to three different Android devices: a phone, an ereader, and a tablet. It's a lot of fun to play with on secondary, non-critical devices, but I get the impression that iPhones are a bit more stable and the apps perform a bit more consistently. Developers just have an easier time with the half dozen, mostly similar hardware configurations of iOS devices, versus the almost infinite variety of devices that end up running Android (and dozens of different flavors of Android, too).

iOS has a decent dev community, too. Apple doesn't make it easy for them, but there's a whole secondary ecosystem of jailbreak apps and tweaks.

A co-worker of mine who has been staunchly Android for years just got an iPhone 4 (as in, today), so I'm going to see how it goes for him.

If anyone's looking for a cheap sandbox device, grab a refurb Nook Color. They're basically unbrickable and there are tons of guides.
