Why do people hate rainy/stormy weather?

It's currently really windy outside with rain scattering and I was just watching the news and some people being interviewed were saying things like "I hate it".

Why does it seem like everyone hates rain and storms? I find it very relaxing especially since we don't get a whole lot of it here. It's a great day to have some hot cocoa.

Do you hate the rain? Why?

The only problem I have is that no one seems to know how to drive in it.

There's one of the reasons. You don't get a lot of it there, so to you it's nice. I love the snow, but only because it's rare. People living in Alaska might think I was crazy. Where I live, it rains too often. Besides during the summer, the sun is rare. It's always cold and murky outside, and it gets dull and boring.

Also, there are different types of rain, and you may only be experiencing the nicer kind. When I was living in a mountainous area of Costa Rica for a few months, the weather was chaotic. I loved it, although not everyone did. It would be sunny for 10 minutes, then it would start raining heavy drops of warm rain the next 5 minutes, then it would start hailing, then the next hour it might be sunny again. If that was the only weather I had ever experienced, I'd say that I loved the rain too.

To me, and to a lot of people, the rain and cold (at least the kind we get here) feels depressing. The sky is gray, it's cold, and the atmosphere gives me memories of walking to school when I was younger, waking up at 7am on 4 hours of sleep, forcing myself to wake up after resetting my alarm clock multiple times, to face a day of stress and being bullied by the other kids.

But I'm sure it isn't all negative associations. It seems there is definitely some natural aversion from the rain. I think it makes a lot of people feel depressed, for no particular experience-based reason. It's just something that naturally happens in the brain.

It just carries an atmosphere of intense depression for me, and makes me feel trapped. I imagine that someone who lives somewhere where it's often sunny during school months would not carry such associations.

Yeah but I still only know a couple of San Diego natives that actually like the rain. Everyone else would rather it be sunny every day. If you are from out of town looking for sun then I'd understand.

i love the wind. It it a necessary to make my dream weather (not dream as in sleeping ).

I love wind a lot. I dont like warm wind, but i dont like arctic wind ( im not sure if americans get that?). I like cold wind. The more the better.

i love rain as well. I love walking in the rain. Cold rain, light rain, mist rain, warm rain, icy cold rain, heavy rain, every rain. I love (cliche i know) looking up while rain falls down on my face.

A lot of people get a type of seasonal depression from lack of light. For those people, the "dreariness" of rain makes them feel blue.

Some people might be movers and shakers or "playboys"- especially out in California, so the rain might hinder their activities.

Personally, I LOVE the rain. The harder the rain, the better. But I'm just a stay-at-home mom. If I had to work out in the weather or travel in it etc, I might feel very differently. It's the same way with snow.
I imagine "bad" weather can be quite the nuisance to people with active lives. (Not to imply DV-ers aren't active )

Heavy rain at night and afternoon with distant thunderclaps is definitely the best sort of weather there is.

I love intense rain, hail and thunderstorms. It's like mother Earth is raging mad.

If I could I would chase tornado's with a camera in the heaviest of storms. I bet it feels amazing...

I love the sheer sound and beauty of gales. But once it starts wrecking shit, things change.

I only hate it, when I'm waiting for the bus in 20 minuttes, and I'm standing in a flood of rain in my summer shoes. Like today. -_-

I think rain is amazing, also thunder (when it's far away).

I LOVE IT!!!! Except for the tornado that almost hit our town last August I love everything and every aspect of every kind of storm.

Don't get me started on driving in adverse conditions, I drift for fun, and know how to handle oh shit situations because of it (never had an accident).

Scary thing is the soccer moms here think their Suburban won't spin out going 55 in six inches of snow just because it's in 4 wheel drive, last winter I was doing 30 and got passed by said soccer mom... she moved over to fast spun out and flipped three times in front of me... about a hundred yards in front of where she ended up there was a trooper checking on a car in the ditch, she could've killed him...

Aside from crap like that I CAN'T WAIT for winter lol.

I LOVE storms. However, when it storms for 20 out of the 30 days in September where I live... I LOVE when the sun comes back out.

I like storms after a long stretch of beautiful weather. (Mostly I like things to "change up" every now and then).

winter gales= arctic wind. Unless you mean normal wind in the winter, i mean the wind that like burns your face from being so cold.

As long the wind isnt arctic wind, i love it, as of course, not a hurricane

Also can't understand why people would hate rainy weather. For me there is only one thing I don't like. When the sky is painted gray with clouds. A blue clear sky, black in the midst of a thunderstorm or night, hell even yellow like the apocalypse is about to start. All these feel good to me in different ways as long as it isn't a monotone gray, it's not depressing but I just don't like the appearance.

Also I'm one of those people who like thunderstorms enough to chase em. Just a few weeks ago there was a really darn strong thunderstorm around, which lasted for several hours. It started when I finished driving school. As I arrived at home I thought it was over, but it was just a short break and as I noticed it's starting up again I grabbed my jacket and went outside, right to the highest place in my surroundings. That place being a mountain with a flat top, equiped with a huge metal construction (which served as a lightning rod in case of doubt) I was able to enjoy 2 hours of 360° thunderstorm panorama. Man that was awesome.

People who work outside don't like working in the rain because we clothes are a pain. The majority of us just like to bitch and complain. I love storms. At the same time, I do a lot of things outside, that I can't do in the rain.

I love the stormy weather and strong winds. Just laying on my bed and looking out my window, listening to the raindrops hitting the roof, its all very serene. Just being outside in the rain makes my day 10^56412 times better. I only like the sun when it is very cool out and breezy, the rest of the time its depressing to me.

I'm surprised by all of your responses.

I don't like when it's just cloudy, then yeah it's just kind of depressing. Especially in the mornings.

Last night I was kind of mad because I couldn't go home on account of the only road leading to my house was closed. Most likely someone hit a telephone pole (see my post about how people around here can't drive in the rain). So I ended up staying the night at my girlfriends house.

I always liked stormy weather, but my current lifestyle demands that I stay outside quite a bit, so it's not fun getting everything wet. That's the only reason I can think of - the inconvenience associated with water dripping down on oneself. . .

yes, we get those soo much in the winter. It's terrible 2006 was the worst. ITs freezing and on top of the gale it pours and pours and causes our creek to surge! Two years ago it put a logjam into our creek.
