      Time to vote again!!

This week's contest was "Rock Solo."

It's a version of the Hendrix classic "Little Wing".. just two tracks, one rhythm, one lead, with 4-5 "fluffs" that I have left in.. I couldn't be bothered to edit out the mistakes. Done in just one take each track. I start off as the original solo, and then morph into improv.

      Welcome Home Solo

This is me playing Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria. If I had a camera you could see how fast my fingers have to go on some parts, including the buildup to the pinch harmonic parts. The whole lead guitar in this recording is actually me, no matter how intergrated it may sound with the song. I kept playing after the backtrack stopped just to prove that.

      It'll do.
      Ranma's Entry:
      (no description offered)
      Hotel California
      Oneironaut's Entry:
For this week's task, I learned the solo to Stricken, the song that I played for the Rhythm Guitar task, a few weeks ago (might as well learn the whole thing, right?? ). In the beginning, I'd figured this solo was way out of my league, because of the fast playing at the end. I was able to get some of the runs down pretty well, but I kind of improvised the very last "descending" run, to the end. I know the exact notes for it, but there is no WAY I could play them as fast as the guitarist in the song does.

But anyway, I know it's not perfect and I don't think it's nearly as good as some of the other entries in this contest but, as a relative n00b, all I can say is that I worked my ass off to learn this in a week and I'm proud of it, damnit!! Haha.

That was so hard that I had to resort to close eyed random clicking. And it happened to be Oneiro.

Everbody did amazing! Everyone had some greatness and some weaknesses, and everything balanced out to where it was evenly matched as great! Nice work everybody!

I voted for Oneiro's because I thought it flowed well and had feeling. They were all very good though.

Good job on the stricken solo O, that's one I've been meaning to learn for a while, the fast parts are tricky and you did a decent job for just spending a week on it. I'd say that solo is one of my top 10 all time favorites.

edit: 666th post, in a rock guitar thread, go figure

      Thanks, man. I appreciate that.
I think it was a pretty big milestone for me. I've usually kept the songs I've learned to play to a pretty conservative limit, because a lot of the faster songs were really intimidating, but I forced myself to learn the faster bit on Stricken, so I feel a little more confident about attempting some others. I'm going to have to start doing some fretting-hand exercises, though, because I'm still a bit slow and sloppy. Hehe.

      Oh yeah...and VOTE, PEOPLE!!!!!

I decided to vote for O'. Could be a bit of a song biased but i thought he did it justice and it sounded awsome. Hard to pick though you guys all sound good.

Yours didn't suck ranma, it was really well done, and I probably would have voted for it myself if I hadn't completely overkilled Hotel California by listening to it to death. The harmonics were very well done in your video.

In the end though, I had to vote for CB, because Welcome Home is an insane song, and I really enjoyed listening to your rendition of it. They were all really good though, it was tough to choose....

      Definitely not!

My blind clicking ended up on Oneiro's, but yours was definitely great! If I was forced to pick, yours would probably tie for first with Oneiro's.

Don't get discouraged. It was great!

Thanks man. Means a lot. Couple more runs through and I could've had it down perfectly (couple rough parts here and there, but hey...).

      It's a close race!

No it didn't ranma.. it was good. I can only think that the song you chose was the wrong choice.. but I don't know.. maybe some improv would have improved your chances, maybe? But what the hell do I know?

VERY tough call. I liked all the entries. In the end for me, based on a combination of complexity and faithfulness to the original, it came down to Oneiro and Ranma - and Ranma took it.

I would have loved to do this one... I've had some great "verbatim" solos worked out in the distant past, but resurrecting any of them would have been a huge project and I haven't even had time to breathe this week. I would have been a choice between the guitar solo to Reelin' In The Years by Steely Dan or I've Seen All Good People by Yes.

I don't see how Disturbed or Coheed and Cambria count as classic rock but the entries were great anyway. I voted for Oneiro because it was a great cover and he made it his own. Ranma's was great too, it would be my second choice.
