Ever got amazed at your own writing?

First of all, this thread is not to brag. Just like I consider my writing good, you may consider it bad. Let's be nice everyone.

      -------------------------------------------------------------------

As quite an old and active DreamViewer, I've got a lot of posts in this website - some older, some recent, some long and some short. But one thing I've noticed, after reading a bunch of older posts of mine, my reaction is "hell, that was smart!". It's like I get impressed at my own writing, especially under circumstances where it was written long ago. I can barely recognise it, and judge it to be extremely good-quality. I've changed a lot lately, became more mature, but I didn't expect my older self to be the way I find it to be now.

What about you, have you ever got amazed at your own writing? Have you ever read a text of yours and thought "I'd never be able to write like that"? Have you ever read your own piece and concluded it couldn't have been written by you, so good it is?

I'm totally and uttermostly boggled by this xD

No. I always look back on what I wrote and think "Ugh, just shut up, you idiot."

I looked back at writing from the seventh grade and thought is was passable for a magazine.

Oddly enough, I don't really past texts of mine. If you're talking about going to "My Posts" and reading old posts, no.. not my thing.

If you're talking about going back and reading written literature, songs, lyrics, etc etc... Maybe occasionally, but I'm rarely ever "amazed" by my own writing. There's been a few times when I really liked my work, but I'd never let my head get that big.
You do this every fucking time.
      No sweat.
      No tears.
      No guilt.
You do this every fucking time.

When I get completely absorbed in writing it becomes facsinating after, to review what wasn't written totally conscious at the time.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

Yep. Sometimes, when writing an essay, developing a discussion, explaining or learning something new, it's as if I even lost awareness just to focus on the thing. Happens a lot with mathematical formulas, for example: I'm able to discover the formula on my own ahead of the teacher's explanation. After a while I just realise what I did, and it really looks like it wasn't me the one to do it. Weird xD

Agreed. There are some things I've written and when I read that I just think, "Man! That's awesome!" .... Unfortunately, since I'm the only one who really knows what's going on, I have to wonder if other would share that sentiment.

I've never looked back at my writing in recent years, however I have looked back towards things from elementary that I thought were about topics I wouldn't have thought I would have been thinking about at that age...

So I guess the answer is no, since I don't look back that often.

I am amazed at your writing. I don't mean to come off as a kiss ass, but your surreal writing really is world class. I have told you that before, but I am not sure if you realize how good it is. Don't worry about thanking me. You already have. I just wanted to make sure you remember what I said.

I'm wracked with self-doubt. What I write rarely impresses me.

It's hard to judge my own work. I'm far more inclined to be critical with my own work than with other peoples.

      xD told ya

      --

I also noticed it happens with poetry, mathematical formulas I'm able to deduce and then have no idea how, and general reasoning. In fact, I've also found that speaking a line of thought out loud is extremely good. I think hearing your own voice helps to make connections...

      Lol.

You know those geniuses that solve 44763x19851 and don't know/don't remember how? I this is similar a happening to that.

I think that, when dealing with high-demanding thought processes, you brain gives up awareness to focus only on the task. Being unaware, you don't remember what happened, or if you do, it seems like it weren't you, or you weren't in control.

Btw do read my WILD tutorial. It's better quality than I thought when I wrote it.

I would just like to point out that your aggrandizing people's mental abilities (even extraordinary people's).

Even the children who are trained to count large numbers without a calculator (usually by using a abacus, and a "non-existent" or "invisible" abacus) aren't that skilled hehe.

Now to be fair there are certain techniques that can significantly decrease the amount of time necessary to do that sort of computation, but at the same time if someone could do it, they would remember how (or atleast be able to explain the formula) unless they have every conceivable number and another number multiplied together value locked up in their head.

Every now and then I do. Often, when I'm writing rhymes, I can come up with some lines that make me go back and just say "damn that was good," but, I think some of my most impressive texts came back when I was paragraph RPing in Yahoo.

You underestimate seome savants out there. There is this guy who spoke thousands of decimals of the pi number to an evaluation commitee, and it's really thousands. I don't think he memorised them either - he seemed to just "know" them.

Plus there is that guy that could calculate 7-digit-number potencies faster than a calculator.

I'm not talking about a trained average person. I'm talking about exceptions. They do it without knowing how they did it - it just comes. Naturally.

      Agreed.

Its almost as if "i" cease to be

As if the writing itself is what "I" am

Making use of this person to express itSelf

When i look back at what was written

Such seems as if i am reading it for the first time

Conscious of its overall meaning, seeing things not seen while writing

I just looked back at a lot of my fictional writing and it really is a surprise reading it. I found I have adapted different personas over the years in how I write. It's like the mind gradually becomes a different person over time while still keeping memories. Anyone agree?

Sums it up frankly. Writing I do always seems impressive when I'm just finished
the next morning it's shit. same with music. And I can look back and think "oh impressive," but.. in reality that's because I'm the only person who can understand my own ass-ups.
