I feel retail clerks are underrepresented in this thread. So...

To hell with you little kids who think I'm an uptight asshole for refusing to sell you a game. I could not care less if you choose to warp your mind, however, I am not about to risk bringing down some ridiculously large fine upon my employer or myself so that you can play a fucking video game.

I am thinking about printing out a sign with the above paragraph and putting it up at work.

Before video games were blamed for all Violence anyone could buy anything.
This was that cult, and the prisoners said it had always existed and always would exist, hidden in distant wastes and dark places all over the world until the time when the great priest Cthulhu, from his dark house in the mighty city of R'lyeh under the waters, should rise and bring the earth again beneath his sway.

How long will it take for people to realize violence comes from a violent and deficient raising, and not videogames. Whoa, look, I just killed 18 people in Counter Strike, might as well leave through the front door and start killing everyone alike!

Parents need to stop threatening and hitting their children in order to educate make them stop bothering them. When a parents does that, the child learns that is it ok to use violence to solve matters.

      --

And Ward, try to be more agreeable god damnit, it's not your fault, but it's not the children's fault either. Don't tell me you have never been a kid wanting to play videogame before. Explaining what you did calmly and mindedly would bring much better results, believe me.

      Or try:

"Do you think my dad will like this game for Christmas? Is 47 too old to enjoy it?"

I've been watching violent movies and playing Diablo I, Diablo II, Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament, etc.. etc.. since I was 5 years old.. Though the games I had when I was 5 was Regular Nintendo.. Less violent I guess.. But around ten I deft had a ton of bloody games..

That's not my point. My point is saying people don't become violent because of playing violent videogames. They become violent because of poor raising. You can't blame the games and censor them thinking they promote violence.

I didn't blame anyone for anything. If you read this thread you will see that my post was written in defense.

I do not want to lose my job and be forced to personally pay a $1,000+ fine over a video game. Wait, make that somebody else's video game. Apparently this makes me a "douchebag" who needs to "get a life".

Hah, a good a attack is the best defence, isn't it?

Again, what I mean is that it's not the child's fault, and they probably don't even know you don't sell them the game because of those circumstances, they probably think you are a meanie, or the way you put it, "douchebag". That's why I recommended calmly explaining what you did up there. Don't say "I won't sell it to you", say "I'm not allowed to sell it to you" - see, quick and painless eureka. That way you don't lose your job, the children don't blame you, and nobody gets angry.

I keep reading my original post but I can not figure out why you think I am attacking anybody.

I posted in response to other people in this thread. In fact I had pulled the word "douchebag" from Black_Eagle's post and the phrase "get a life" from Mes Tarrant's post, both referring to people who had asked them for ID when buying a game.

I understand I was abrasive but come on, this is the internet. I would not talk like that to a customer for the same reason I would not sell an M rated game to a minor: I need my job. The fact is that I do explain myself when I am forced to deny somebody service but people just do not give a shit about me or my job; they just want their video game.

Edit: I am not as butthurt as it probably seems.

I know what your point was. I very much understand that parents are to blaim for everything. I was showing you that you were right, I never shot up any schools or was overly violent because I was raised correctly...

      Haha I get you now

      --

      and @ Ward

As you said it yourself - those people give a shit about you or your job. Try to take it less personally. I bet you would also get upset if you went to buy a game when you were a teen and couldn't because of some damn restrictions someone came up with. Take it like this - they aren't upset against you, they are upset against the restrictions and the shop policy which doesn't allow them to buy the game.

You know, the restrictions are even more stupid since, as someone said before, an older stranger can just go and buy it for a 7yo to play. I believe a recommendation would be MUCH more effective. I don't see why on earth a game should be rated 18. Most people can already think for themselves at the age of 14. It's just a game, not hardcore animal-sex porn, damn it.

Checking I.D's is a must at most major retailers, because it ensures the job of the employee.

Say little timmy, 10 years old, bought GTA IV. He brings it home, plays it, the next day he smacks his little sister in a fight or something. The mom finds out he has played this game, so she sues the company for selling a matured rated game to a minor (Which is illegal). Yeah, it saves the company.
You do this every fucking time.
      No sweat.
      No tears.
      No guilt.
You do this every fucking time.

I know some people will say it's rated 18 for a reason but i was playing GTA1 at the age of 6!! And to be honest i am not even a violent person.
So if i go into the store and pick up the game will the guy at the counter ask me for ID and everything, or do they not acutally care?
Some shop assistants are just self important pricks, I get asked for id all the time because im short, the shop on my street wont sell eggs to under 18s because they have had kids buy em before and then chuck em at local houses, the guy who works in there was in my year at school infact was in my social circle, he knows my age but still ids me for eggs lol, makes him feel like a big man or something, if i dont show it he wont sell me them. its just a big power trip to many shop workers.
