I have observed this many times,the fact that if you smile at someone,even a stranger that they will smile back.In life we are faced with many scenarios,spousal life,our parents,our children,being a child,work places,our friends,acceptance in society, acceptance in life,being successful,being ordinary and being different.It is how we choose to look at this issues and face them that makes us who we are. If you are free inside your mind to enjoy in life and to just let go and not have those everyday worries then the smiling part comes easy.But,let's say you are having a bad day,things just are not going your way,would a smile from a passerby make a difference?

I personally like smiling at strangers...it makes me feel warm and I am often greeted with reciprocal warm, endearing smile back. It tends to put me in a state of happiness for a few short minutes (despite what may have been on my mind prior to the smile exchange).

Dreamviews, your mission...should you choose to accept it is to MAKE EYE CONTACT and smile at 3 complete strangers. Report back here the results in as much detail as possible.

1. Did you smile at a male or female (how many of each)
2. Did they maintain eye contact with you?
3. Were they frowning before they noticed your smile?
4. Did they reciprocate the smile?
5. Additional comments you'd like to add

This is also great for people wanting to break out of their comfort zones. Maintaining eye contact with the person you are engaging in a smile is VITAL, so be sure to follow through with that.

Then you're a pro! Perhaps you can share with us some of the benefits you've gained from smiling at "millions" of complete strangers and how they've responded towards you?

Ok that was an exaggeration, but i smile to like over 50, and outside of work too. Most smile back, others just stare.

I'll try this the next time I go out. It reminds me of that poem that was circulating in chain letters a while back:

I, too, am a "professional" smiler. Even if I'm sick or not feeling well (emotionally) I can't help but smile when out in public. I've received countless comments on how happy I always seem because I'm "always smiling". But don't get me wrong- I'm not smiling like the chesshire (sp) cat or some maniac... my smiles are more like lop-sided grins

But they're equally contagious. Almost everyone I pass smiles at me or nods or both.

But I'll try to get some exact figures the next time I'm out...

I've been "sick" for almost 2 weeks (98% of it is just stress, anxiety, nerves)... so I didn't get to the store today either.

I HAVE to go tomorrow though, so I'll be sure to try to pay more attention.

It's been raining here too- that and a little bit of occassional hail.

I do this all the time... mainly to females because it's weird to smile at random guys.

almost allllll the people will smile back even if they were not happy/frowning before.

The ones that dont smile back usually give strange look, but deep inside they are happy you smiled at them and it makes their day =P
