While that viewpoint is by no means gone, it's way less prevalent than in the past. In non-douchebag circles, guys who sleep around excessively are considered shady, and girls who occasionally hook up with no intention of having a relationship are considered...human. Once upon not so long a time ago, girls were expected to be virgins at marriage. The 'purity ring' crowd notwithstanding, how many people over the age of 21 would expect a new partner, much less a fiance, to be a virgin? The double standard hasn't disappeared entirely, but it's definitely eroding.

This is my history professor's way of explaining the reason for patriarchy and restrained female sexuality. Early hunter-gatherers had no qualms about unknown paternity: children were children. Being mostly nomadic, transient, and unable to master hardship, (disease, game loss, etc.) if a kid survived, that was all that mattered. But as society settled and became more agrarian with the disappearance of big game after the last ice age, the concept of land ownership came into play. Since the farm was the economic lifeblood of the family, inheritance disputes from an illegitimate child could deal a severe blow to a male's genetic line. Thus it was in a male's best interest to not let his wife sleep around on him so that the farm stayed within his bloodline. Not a complete explanation, but it might still offer some insight.

I thought it might have originated from insecure men who invented organized religion to guilt trip/scare women into being subservient and loyal. Scientifically, the more a woman sleeps around, the more genetically superior her offspring will be, coming from a large and varied gene pool. Men are still driven to give their seed to as many women as possible for the survival of the species. Not that we have any problem with that anymore...

Yes, I'm serious. As for the religion invented by man thing. I'm not using the logic that the gods are men so it must be created by men. I'm using the logic that mostly in history women were considered second to men. Thus no one would listen to their ideas on religion.
