The very UN racist television ad

Kentucky Fried Chicken was forced to pull down this ad from australian television, because it was deemed racist:

      Racist my foot. Anybody agree?

Who is the disgruntled employee at the ad agency who came up with that one? Maybe it was just an Australian who doesn't know anything about racial stereotypes. If so, then I guess it's innocent. If he does know about them, then he's a pretty twisted son of a bitch who needs to be fired.

      I would feel awakward too!!!!!

      Reminds me of this:

By our standards and social conditioning, it's racist. But I think we need to learn to acknowledge the differences in culture. That these acts may not carry the same negative connotation as they do in America.

Ya know, racist used to mean that one color thought itself superior to the other.

Now, you could be deemed racist for not liking African American hairstyles.

Not quite. Innocently enough as it is, I'm pretty sure you're not getting why they think its racist.

Its not that he felt awkward being around dancing black people.

There's been a connotation between Blacks and KFC for a while now, has been most apparent on the internet. It is actually a racial stereotype that has been very prominent lately.

The racist note in the commercial is that "Blacks love KFC" deal.

Tough call, to be honest. On the face, it certainly does look racist.

Umm, why is he the only white person there? What is he doing there? From the point of view where it seems racist, he's a lone white victim uncomfortably surrounded by a black mob, and he gives them all fried chicken and says, "That was too easy".

I have to say, what the fuck...

      What's wrong with this commercial?

KFC can't have many excuses for this one, considering their headquarters are in
the U.S., where the stereotype originated. The fact that they're international
as well should mean that they put some time into planning out what is
appropriate for what cultures. Australia isn't far removed enough from the U.S.
for this to be understood as an innocent thing.

Most Australians do not care for the general stereotype, nor racism. It's just a harmless ad in most opinions.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

This ad is not racist, but it can be viewed as such because people don't quite understand it.

Australia and The West Indies(also known as Windies, a group of island nations including Cayman Islands, Haiti, Bahamas, Jamaica) are great cricketing rivals. Windies are black skinned. At this moment, Australia and the Windies teams are playing against each other.

That white man in the commercial is a lone Australian cricket supporter, wearing the colours of the Australian cricket team uniform. The black people are Windies supporters.

Being a KFC commercial, the white guy get's the Windies supporter on his side by offering them chicken.

KFC has been official cricket sponsor for years. If it was Australia vs England, or Australia vs New Zealand, you'd see all white people, with a lone Aussie supporter giving chicken to white supporters of the other team.

It's just conincidental that Australia and the Windies are playing against each other this month, so you have a white supporter amongst black supporters.

Ahh! Nice to get some clarification from someone who really knows what they're talking about.

Lol it's got nothing to do with blacks loving kfc. I think the things that were construed as racism were either the white guy feeling awkward around a bunch of black people or him giving them fried chicken. The racial stereotype is blacks love fried chicken, not KFC. But anyway, thanks for the clarification flashdance, I didn't get it either. However I didn't see any racism in the ad anyway lol I had to replay it 3 times to realise that it must be one of the two things I mentioned. IMO the people who pointed this out are probably racist but don't want to admit it.
Me and my brother have started parodying people like that. We say RACIST! even if someone just mentions the word black or asian or whatever. It's funny because people who seriously aren't racist don't pick up on things like this ad. Whereas people who are but don't want to admit it, pick up on it because they consciously distinguish between black and white, then they complain because racism is looked down upon now.

You don't live in the United States. What Flashdance said might be true. I can see how it would be. But... over here, the two biggest stereotypes of black people are that they are dumb and that they love fried chicken (and watermelon). Playing basketball and dancing really well take a back seat to the first two. When racist white people make fun of black people, those are usually the first two ideas they start flapping about. So, when a white guy who is surrounded by black people wins over the black people by offering them fried chicken and then says, "Too easy," it looks extremely racist. Also, Australia never had a civil war that was partially over the slavery of black people or an extremely heated political climate over the unequal treatment of blacks. With that in mind, do you understand how it seems from our side of the fence?
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

Nah seriously. I myself would never be offended by an add like this if I were a racial minority. But I can see people that would. It isn't even about the situation, but the attitude of the guy in the situation.

I spose I could see how that could appear. But this ad is Australian anyway so it shouldn't have even been viewed by Americans. It was meant for an Australian audience, more specifically a cricket audience who would get what flash said. I guess here it is different, we have racism but not as much as America does. I've grown up with black people been treated the same as anyone else so I guess I don't even notice really that people are black. Whereas in America there's very clearly a mind set that blacks and whites are separate. Not in everyone, but even the people that don't separate them in actions/words, would still separate them mentally. My guess anyway.
Like I saw on the American news with this Tiger Woods thing "the black community is outraged at...."

Omfg just realized this thread was in 2010, thanks for wasting my time lsddream. Spent so long writing that I guess I'll keep it in a spoiler anyway though. I hate when people do this. Am I supposed to look at the OP dates on every thread I post in or something? Old threads should appear in a different color or just be entirely removed or something.

      Spoiler for @!#$:

I didn't notice the date at first either. But your post made me realize something Dianeva,
"The fact that racism is looked so down upon only makes it worse. I'm so paranoid of seeming racist that whenever I do encounter a black person I find myself trying really hard not to treat them any differently than I would someone who wasn't black, and feel terribly guilty for even having to try. Of course if I actually know a person somewhat, my impression of them is going to be dependent on their personality, not their appearance, but it's a problem for first-impressions."

I'm like that, but with men. Let's say I'm walking somewhere and I notice a man or men behind. Even if I'm uncomfortable, I won't act it. And if it's a black man, I'm doubly paranoid of coming across as racist or sexist. I watched a Rosanne show eons ago where she was working in a Diner and flipped out when a black man banged on the door after hours. It was a show about racism but I thought "I'd react that way no matter what color he was!!"
