I've never done it before. Most of the time when I get a lucid dream, I forget to do something meaningful and end up doing something really stupid (last night I prioritized catching a catfish with my bare hands over stabilizing the dream, so I lost lucidity). Rarely ever does a DG show up, either, and they always seem to change each time. Their only consistency is that they show up at the end of an in-dream "lucid dreaming class", in which I re-learn about lucid dreaming with a low level of lucidity (just barely aware that it's a dream) and become lucid after the class ends, at which I am given the opportunity to talk to the teacher who is more intelligent than most DCs.
The only notable time i've possibly interacted with my subconscious was after one of those dreams. After the class, the room transformed into my living room and everybody except for me and the teacher (who sat down on my sofa) had disappeared. I began to leave through my front door when I suddenly remembered a particularly nasty monster from a creepypasta. I knew that he would be outside if I left the house (in fact I saw his face in some tree branches) so I consulted the teacher for help. I asked what I should do because I knew I would be attacked if I went outside, so he led me outside. I presumed he would fight off the monster, but he just wandered around in my yard with the monster never making an appearance. After a while of following him I said "this is getting dull" and I left. Though at first I thought that his help was rather useless, after following him for a while I just forgot about the monster; if the teacher represented a piece of my subconscious, it helped me evade a potential nightmare by forgetting about the monster.
In the future, though, i'll try searching for a character similar (in behavior) to the one you saw. That man is, quite frankly, awesome.
