      Why is flying so...well Great?

either lucid or non-lucid, flying is my, and many others, most favorite thing to do. I get that, but what's so great about it? It's overwhelming, and I need an answer

      Talking

Imagine soaring over Mt. Everest, diving and swerving through the grand canyon, fleeing into the soft wispy-ness of the clouds . . .
      why is it so great?
Maybe it's because it's because we can't do it in real life, unless we get a genetic enhancement, but we'd probably pull of an iron man in around 2040 .
Maybe because it's so calming, and thrilling a the same time, feeling the air in your hair.
But I haven't gotten to that stage yet, so wave off my post here XD.

Many people enjoy flying, simply because its an experience you'll never get in Real Life. Its also enjoyable because its one of the easiest things to do while Lucid, which makes it an appealing choice. Since flying is simple enough (for many anyway), they enjoy doing it even more.

      Close enough...

But I agree, flying is just awesome because its one of those things you just can't do in real life...

I actually don't really enoy the rare instances of flying in my dreams...because it's always more like being suspended in the air and being afraid of falling...

I truly dunno, flying is boring, teleporting is far better for me, tough sometimes the scene may require me to fly, so to do it.
I suppose it has something to do with humans and their envy on birds flying lol

lol true, but I never liked to fly, especially learning, going up then failing and breaking some bones isn't fun, then when I was able to do it freely, found it wasn't that interesting and moved to teleporting, free eternal falling is so fun.

Have you ever accidentally attempted to fly in real life?

Flying is probably boring because you've done it so many times, as have I. It's not necessarily boring, to me, but not something I strive for in lucid dreams. For those who are new to LD'ing, it's fun, and worth trying. Flying was the first thing I would do, back when I discovered LD'ing in 1986. It's fun, it makes you feel free, and it depletes you from all responsibilities.

Walms, was flying really boring when you first started to LD? Just curious. It wasn't for me. It is now, but it wasn't for about 10 years.

I still can't teleport. I wish could! The only way I can get from one place to another is through doors. After 20+ years of LDing, I wish I could just teleport.

have you tried to the Hiro Nakamora Technique

close your eyes and concentrate so hard you shake a bit in the dream then open your eyes...that is how i teleport

it gets easier the more times you do it though...

the better you imagine the place the easier it is to get there

      i hope that helped

Have you tried just flying through the grand canyon or something? Someplace that is crazily midblowing, or the Galopogas (of course you would need to go there first for reference)?

I've never heard of that technique, but I'll definitely give it a try.

I don't fly very often in LD's, mostly because when I wake up I feel like, sure that was really great, but that it was a waste of an opportunity to try something new.

Yes, actually, but I was reeeaaaaaalllly drunk.

I didn't even feel the impact when I hit the ground.

And I don't think I could ever get bored of flying in dreams. It's just so exhilarating. I love hitting different speeds and swooping and diving all around the environment. I've had some awesome chase scenes that involved flying; including one time, while lucid, when I was chasing after some guy who was taking off down a runway in a fighter jet.

Even if I'm just 'standing there,' hovering a few inches off the ground, I just love the feeling of flying in dreams. Every now and then, I'll do it involuntarily. I'll be doing something different, like dancing, and then my feet will automatically just start lifting up off the ground - sometimes uncontrollably. I think it has something to do with my trying to stay 'light on my feet,' while dancing, but I'm not sure.

      What a neat idea.

It reminds me, a friend of mine told me about a semi-lucid dream she had once (she knew she was dreaming, but didn't feel she could control it).

She was fleeing from someone/thing that was after her, and in doing so she took an elevator to the top of a very high building. When it eventually found her, she gave up and decided to jump off the top of the building. She said the sensation of falling was very intense and realistic, but not in a scary way. (She even described it as similar to falling asleep?)

About 50 feet or so from the pavement, she grew wings from her back (which she also felt very intensely) and was able to fly parallel to the ground, and eventually higher up.

I'm only guessing, but maybe because she was semi-lucid, the sensation of falling didn't wake her up. It may also have been the reason she was able to sprout wings, as I don't know of any LD'ers that use wings to fly. I wonder if something like falling could help those who don't find it easy to fly?

At any rate, this eternal falling thing definately seems worth exploring. Thank you for the idea!

I enjoy flying, too. I am always fascinated by the level of detail
that I can imagine though I have never experienced it in real life
(exept for flying in an airplane but that's usually not the same altitude...)

Hope to soar again soon, good nite folks!

Ha ha! I can picture it. I've done the same. I once jumped off the VIP section at a club. The next day I was wondering why my knees were bruised and hurting. My husband asked "Don't you remember 'trying to fly', last night?" Umm, no.

And the other day I was jumping on the trampoline with my kids. I decided to do an RC. If I jump off and remain in the air, I'm dreaming. If I land, I'm not. I landed, twisted my ankle, and rolled into the grill. Nope, not dreaming. I think I'll stick to looking at my hands, instead of trying to fly.
