Hello! "ADA" is an umbrella term that covers a diverse group of approaches, ranging from KingYoshi's "ADA" (which you can find on this site) to the kind of all-day lucid presence taught in "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep." Another similar idea is the AD/RC or the "all day reality check," where you are continually monitoring some aspect of your experience with critical reflection and determining, on a moment-to-moment basis, if you are in a dream or are awake.
The proponents of ADA claim it is the strongest way to achieve continual awareness throughout the day and night. The critics of it say it is impossible for most people to do, and does not in fact guarantee dream lucidity.
There is nothing magical about FILD, it is just a WILD with an anchor of paying attention to your fingers and imagining movement there.
Have you tried a more intentional MILD practice? A few months of daily MILD together with consistent dream recall generally works out very well for a lot of people.
Then there is SAT, for situational awareness. It's like part-time ADA -- not all day, but some number of times throughout the day.
How long do I have to do ADA before getting the first lucid dream, or, better said, the first batch?
It is impossible to say. There are too many variables, all of them dependent on you: your psychology, beliefs, how you sleep and dream, your approach to learning difficult activities, your outlook on life, just to name a few.
